Despite the dire situation, Hannah began to laugh. He did that to her, which made her chest tight with grief at the same time.
“Come on, you,” she said.
Hannah scooped him up as delicately as she could, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as she began to walk quickly to the front door. The housekeeper was still terrified in the corner of the room, watching Hannah blast past her.
“Call the police,” Hannah yelled at her. “Tell them there was an attack. I’m getting Levi some help! Don’t worry!”
The housekeeper nodded, then picked up her phone from the counter. Hannah wished there was more she could do to comfort her, but she had to take care of Levi. Her world would collapse otherwise.
She guided him into the backseat, sitting him up with a few blankets. She pressed the jacket into his wounds, and he groaned like an injured animal.
“Hold on, babe,” she said softly. “Please hold on. I’m getting you to Nick.”
She kissed his forehead and climbed into the front seat. She strapped herself in and gunned it out of the driveway, likely breaking a few laws along the way.
Headquarters wasn’t too far from where Levi lived, thankfully. Hannah flew there, looking into the rearview mirror every now and then to make sure her beloved didn’t pass out. He was gazing deliriously out the window and sweating profusely.
“Are you with me, babe?” she said loudly.
He remained staring out the window as his grip on the jacket loosened.
“Everything is so beautiful,” he said mournfully. “I’ve never noticed before.”
She kept going, gripping the steering wheel and even firing past a few red lights. She knew she was a better driver than any of those losers out there. Plus, she could pay the fines once everything was dealt with.
Hannah had alerted Nick on her phone as she drove, so a few nurses were waiting right outside HQ when she arrived. They helped Levi out of the back of the car and onto a gurney.
“What happened?” Nick appeared at the side of the car, eyes darting back and forth with concern.
“Lincoln,” Hannah said, holding back tears. “He shot him. I don’t know why, but it’s bad, Nick.”
Nick looked at her thoughtfully, like he was trying to decipher a code.
It made her irritated slightly, especially during an emergency.
“What?” she snapped.
“He’s yours, isn’t he?” Nick said. “Your fated mate.”
Hannah clenched her jaw at him, not responding as she followed the gurney inside. The nurses were taking him up to the operating room and held out their arms as she tried to follow Levi inside.
“You can’t go past here,” a small man said. “Nurses and medical personnel only.”
“Just try to stop me,” Hannah growled.
Nick was behind her again, taking her by the shoulders. She shook him off, growling again so loudly that all of the nurses gazed back in surprise.
“Give them a second, Hannah,” Nick said. “Let them do their work for him.”
“He’s going to fucking die, Nick,” Hannah said harshly. “They shot him in the fucking chest! It’s a miracle that he’s still awake at all!”
The nurses pushed Levi into the operating room and closed the doors behind them. Nick and Hannah stood at a glass window that looked in. Hannah saw in her peripheral vision that one of the nurses had drawn curtains around Levi.
Nick was stalling, which made Hannah’s frustration skyrocket.
She proceeded to hammer her fist into the glass, which was supposed to be bulletproof but left an indent anyway. The punch made a hollow thud sound, causing Nick’s eyes to shoot back in her direction.
“I know what you’re going to propose,” Nick finally said. “But you know the risks as well as I do. It is just as likely that he will die with the serum as it is that it’ll save him.”
