Sarah examined the front of the box. “It’s a beautiful color, but I think I want to go darker than that.”

A minute later, Sarah pulled out a box that showed a woman with glossy dark hair, so brown it was almost black. “I was thinking something more like this.”

“That’s a big change, wow.”

“You don’t think it will look good on me?”

Lacy hurried to reassure her. “I think you can pull it off! I love your blonde hair, but I know you’re ready for this change. Here, hold the box up beside your face so I can picture it.”

Sarah complied and Lacy smiled at her.

“It will definitely bring out your dark eyes. I say let’s go for it!”

“Yay!” Sarah beamed, looking more than excited.

They headed up toward the cash registers, ready to check out.

“It’s getting late, but I can come over and help you dye it tomorrow,” Lacy said as Sarah reached for her wallet.

“Promise?”

Lacy rolled her eyes and grinned. “I’m not going to leave you on your own. I promise.”

Sarah exhaled with relief. “Good. I’m going to need your expertise!”

“I’m no expert,” Lacy warned.

“Still, you have more experience than me.”

“Well, between the two of us, we’ll have you turned into a brunette beauty in no time.”

Sarah squealed with excitement. “I can’t wait for tomorrow!”

CHAPTERSIXTEEN

“That’s the fiftieth drink today, and it’s only eleven thirty in the morning!” Will crowed, just loudly enough for Sarah to hear but not loudly enough to bother the customers.

Sarah reached out for a high-five and he complied, then grabbed her hand and gave it a victory shake, holding it for just a touch too long. His cheeks burned a little as he realized what he was doing and he dropped her hand as though burned, hoping she hadn’t noticed the way he’d been admiring how tiny her hand was in his.

“We need a secret handshake or something,” she joked. “High-fives are great and all, but I don’t think they’re going to cut it.”

“A secret handshake? What are we, six?”

Sarah stuck out her tongue. “Fine, you’re not invited to my top-secret clubhouse after school.”

“Is it a treehouse?”

“Yep, and it’s got a slideanda tire swing.”

“A tire swing, you say?”

“A tire swing.”

“I take it back! I take it back!”

“Hmm… I’ll allow a take-back if you make me a chai latte.”

“You drive a hard bargain, but I think I can handle that,” Will tossed back with a crooked grin. He liked that they were starting to joke around more, that their interactions were becoming easier. It was so much better than when he’d first gotten to town.
