“Because he kens he has nothing to fear from us,” Aiden replied, his voice just as soft as hers.
The stag bowed his head to them, and with solemn, almost ethereal grace, he walked away, vanishing into the woods beyond. For a moment the spell of the monarch of the glen lingered like a golden haze over Anna and Aiden, and then finally it faded as all magic does from time to time.
“Whoever ye are, lass, ye must have a royal heart. The monarch sees ye as his equal.”
Anna wanted to wave the notion away and argue that stags simply did not go about bowing to people in forests. But this was Aiden’s glen, and a kind of magic hung heavy in the air, making it feel like she was in a wonderful dream where anything was possible and not simply in a forest like any other. In this place, it was possible that a kingly deer might bow his head.
“I can feel it—the magic,” she told him. “I’m not dreaming, am I?”
Aiden pulled her into his arms and cupped her cheeks as their eyes met.
“I feel it too. ’Tis stronger now than before, because of ye.” The desire in his eyes wasn’t merely physical. She could see the heat there in his gaze, but also something softer, infinitely deeper like the depths of the ocean that he’d rescued her from.
He lowered his head toward hers, and their lips met in a spark of glorious fire. She was captive to the burning sweetness of Aiden’s mouth. He curled an arm around her waist, and she clutched his shoulders, feeling the heat and strength of him beneath the white lawn fabric. A flame kindled to life within her, warming her as she parted her lips beneath his tongue. It felt wicked, wanton, and yet utterly perfect to let her tongue entwine with his.
She had never known kissing could be equal parts fire and tenderness. A delicious ache in her lower belly made her clench her thighs together. Aiden’s strong hand pressed into the hollow of her lower back, pulling her tight to him. He was so tall, yet she didn’t mind standing up on her toes to kiss him. His hand moved down and cupped her bottom, which he clenched hard. A groan escaped her at the sudden throb between her thighs.
“Aiden,” she breathed urgently against him.
“Aye?” he murmured back before stealing another kiss that made her toes curl.
“I need... I...” She wasn’t sure what she needed; she only hoped that he would understand.
His hand moved on her bottom as he started to pull up her skirts along one hip.
“What are you doing?” She didn’t pull away; she was too excited by the fresh spark of passion that rippled beneath her skin. Then his mouth was on hers, and she gasped in surprise as his warm fingers delved through her underpinnings to touch her bare skin. She dug her nails into his shoulders as he reached the sensitive folds of her sex and began to stroke. She was fairly certain she’d never been touched down there by anyone other than herself.
“Easy now.” Aiden flicked his tongue in her ear. He slid a finger inside her, and she felt a rush of wetness in response to his touch. She tried to close her thighs in embarrassment.
“Open for me, Anna. Trust me to give ye what ye need.” He nipped her earlobe, tugging on it in a way that sent a thrill from the tips of her breasts down to where he touched her. She arched into him, allowing his finger to push deeper, panting against him as he withdrew the finger and thrust it back in. He continued the motion over and over, changing positions and pace each time she gave a little startled cry. Then he inserted another finger, stretching her a little more as his penetration quickened. All the while his mouth was gently exploring her neck, her ears, or her lips. She was lost to him in this sensual but oh so lovely assault on her senses.
Something inside her was racing toward a high peak. She grew desperate for more, more frantic as she gasped and begged him to move faster, to give her what she needed. And then it happened. Something exquisite blinded her, obliterating all her thoughts.
For a brief few seconds, she felt as though she contained the sun itself within her body. She cried out Aiden’s name, and when she opened her eyes, she found him staring at her in wonder and reverence. He withdrew his hand from between her legs, and after a soft kiss to her lips, he used a handkerchief to clean his hand, then reached up beneath her skirts and wiped between her legs. She clung to his arms, her legs trembling too hard for her to trust herself to stand.
“That was yer first time?” he asked. His voice held a hint of roughness to it, as though he was just as affected by what had happened as she was.
“Y-yes... What was that?”
“Ye dinna know? How are ye as innocent as a bairn?” He sat down on the bed of wildflowers and pulled her close to him so that she sat between his legs and leaned back against him in the sunlight.
“Is that what women feel when they lie with men?”
“Aye, but it doesna always feel like that. It’s better when yer heart is involved, ye ken.”
“Like love...”
“Like love.”
“But you didn’t—”
“No, but it wasna my turn. Someday we will share it together. Today was yer time to experience it, and I assure you, it was my truest pleasure to watch ye.” He stroked his hands down her arms, soothing her.
“Oh...” She was a little disappointed at that. She wanted him to feel that glorious rush too. He cupped her chin and tilted her face up to his so he could kiss her again. She giggled and relaxed, sated in ways she never knew she could be. He held her as the clouds passed overhead.
“Aiden... I remembered something while I was riding with you today.”
“What did ye remember?”
