“Y-yes.”

“Hold yer breath. I willna go too deep.”

Down they plunged beneath the surface of the enchanted water. The drumming she’d felt inside her head grew to a pounding in her skull as a thousand images darted through her mind.

She was being dragged through a dark forest, then shoved to her knees. The silver of a blade flashed as it was raised above her head. Her hands curled into the black soil of the earth as she heard a bellow of primal rage. Aiden was fighting someone wreathed in darkness. But he was losing…He was going to watch her die...

“Anna!” He roared her name, and the earth shook at his might. The sword arced above her...The vision changed.

Aiden stood before her bleeding, and then he stumbled backward and fell into some vast dark pit... never to return.

A voice spoke through the water bubbling around her: “You will take his life...”

Anna opened her mouth to scream, and she was suddenly fighting for air, fighting to get to the surface. She broke free of the water, sobbing and coughing.

“Anna!” Aiden pulled her to him even as she turned to push him away. “What is it, lass?”

Still sobbing, she surrendered and dug her fingers into his shoulders as she held on to him.

“Iwill cause your death. I saw it. Oh, Aiden...,” she moaned against his chest. But rather than release her, he only held her tighter.

“It’s all right, my heart,” he whispered as he took her out the water. “I ken what it means to love ye.”

She lifted her head up to stare at him as he carried her toward the large stone they’d sat upon earlier. “You do?” Her chemise clung wet and cold to her skin, and she almost longed to go back into the water even though she feared what she might see.

“Aye, I do.” He sat down on the stone and settled her in his lap and kissed her. “And I dinna care. Whatever may come, I dinna care so long as I have the chance to love ye as long as fate will let me.”

She saw the truth in his eyes. He understood what she’d seen, had even been expecting it. How could he have known?

“But if you die because of me, if I lose you... What’s left in the world for me without you?” she asked in a small voice.

Aiden lowered his face to hers until their foreheads touched. “There is everything, my bonnie lass, everything. Life will still go on, even if I’m not with ye. Ye must live, no matter what happens. Promise me ye will.”

Anna wanted to shake her head and beat her fists against his bare chest, but didn’t. Her mind was still caught on the vision of Aiden falling into darkness because he had tried to save her life. She was the one who should die... and perhaps when the time came, she’d find a way to save him, even if she perished. Resolved to that end, she managed to give him the answer he wanted.

“I... promise.”

“Good.” He nuzzled her nose with his, and the chill on her wet skin faded as desire replaced her fear.

Gripped by need, she dug her hands into his hair and kissed him. That was all it took for them both to forget where they were. Everything she felt in that moment for him, for herself, for the future she dared to dream where nothing bad could happen, all poured from her lips to his. Fire and sweetness burned between them, and she wondered if the waters of the fairy pools had somehow enchanted their kisses.

Aiden’s arms wrapped around her as he stood and carried her to the soft green grass, away from the fairy pools. With every step, she felt that hard part of him pressing against her belly, and it created an ache deep within her that only he could satisfy. She arched against him, trying to rub herself against his body, and he groaned against her lips.

“Ye’ll be the sweetest death of me, Anna,” he growled against her lips and held her tighter to him as he finally stopped walking. She peppered kisses along his jaw and neck, feeling reckless and wild. He gripped her bottom with one hand, pressing her against his groin, and this time she was the one who moaned as the throb between her thighs increased tenfold.

“Please...,” she begged him.

He set her down on her feet and then retrieved the folded plaid, which he’d laid by his boots and trousers. He rolled it out on the grass and knelt so he could remove his wet shirt. Her mouth turned dry at the sight of his chest, the way the planes of muscle rolled into his rippled abdominal muscles before dipping in a sharpVshape just above the bones of his hips, as if directing her eyes down to the dark line of hair and then to his...

Her eyes widened at her first real look at an erect male cock. It was huge... too huge. It couldn’t possibly fit inside her... Yet she was fascinated and afraid all at once, wanting to reach out and touch it and still hesitant.

“Will...” She swallowed hard. “Will it fit?” she whispered shakily.

Aiden smiled sweetly, but she saw a hint of mischief in his blue-gray eyes.

“Aye, lassie, it will. But I will go slowly at first. Ye need to stretch to take a man yer first time.”

She wouldn’t have believed anyone else but him. He wouldn’t lie to her.
