“Perhaps it’s best we stay away from London, if that’s the case,” Brock added. “Why don’t we join the women and have some tea?”
Brodie shot Aiden a brotherly look of mischief. “Only if we tip a bit of whisky into our cups.”
“I second that,” Aiden said with a laugh.

Christmas morning
Anna placed her chin on Aiden’s bare chest and drew patterns on his skin as he slept. The morning sun reflected off the snow outside and lit up their bedchamber. Aiden’s tame pine marten was curled up on the armchair. It stretched and yawned before curling right back up to sleep, tucking its tail around its body. Anna smiled, feeling exactly the same. She didn’t want to leave this warm bed for at least another few hours.
“What are ye thinking about?” Aiden said.
She giggled. “I didn’t know you were awake.”
He stroked a hand through her unbound hair.
“I woke when ye did, lass.”
“Happy Christmas,” she said, barely able to contain her joy. She had been holding on to a secret for a long time, a full month to be certain, but now she couldn’t wait.
“Do you want your present?” she asked seductively.
“My present?” He seemed intrigued by the idea.
“Yes...” She scooted up his body a little so that she lay even with him, their faces close together on his pillow. Then she took his hand and tucked it under the warm blankets and placed it on her belly. She expected him to be surprised at what she was hinting at, but instead he smiled mischievously.
“I was wondering when ye planned to tell me.”
“You knew?”
“Ye’ve been very passionate in bed, more than usual, and yer breasts have grown larger and more sensitive. I can feel the changes in ye.”
“Oh...” She was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t a surprise to him.
“Since the moment I realized ye were with child, I’ve been bursting for ye to tell me.”
Anna nuzzled her nose with his before kissing him. “Truly?”
“Truly.” He cupped her face and deepened the kiss, slipping his tongue between her lips.
“Well, I had to be sure before I told you.”
“I thought that might be why. I didna want to upset ye by pushing ye.” He was quiet a moment, and then his gaze sharpened on her face. “Anna, do ye mind if I ask ye something?”
She nodded, curious as to what could be on his mind.
“That day at the wishing well, ye said the well granted yer wish. What did ye wish for?”
Her gaze turned solemn as she recalled those terrifying moments. “Every time I dreamed about you in the well, I wished that you’d find a way to save me, to break through the water and come to me. You did. You saved me that day, the way I’d always hoped you would. And I don’t simply mean that you saved me from danger. You saved me from a life that would never have been my own. You’ve given me love and happiness, and a life that will always be mine.”
“Perhaps the well granted yer wish because I wished for that too. I was desperate to save ye, to break free through the water and take yer hand in those dreams, and not only to save ye but to love ye... and how it felt to finally surface in the well after that fall and somehow not die. A wish was certainly granted that day. A very powerful one.”
“I agree,” she echoed before kissing him.
When they finally broke apart, Anna traced his lips. “I’m glad I got lost in Scotland.” She drew her fingertips down the line of his nose, and Aiden’s eyes were clear of the storms that once haunted them. She chuckled. “Lost with a Scot... Sounds like a wonderful adventure, doesn’t it?”
Aiden stroked her hair, his eyes searching hers. “It was a wonderful adventure, finding ye, and ye’ll never be lost again, not so long as I’m with ye,” he promised.
