That's when I saw the huge wolf charging for her.
I didn't even think about it. I just reacted. I dove at the wolf, knocking her out of the way.
Her howl ended abruptly as Mayia ripped the wolf's throat out.
Magic blasted over Mayia's head and she ducked, her face paling. She gave me a nod before turning toward another wolf.
Magic sparked between Fagua and her mother. But the wolves were circling closer to Fagua. I barreled through the wolves, knocking them out of my way. I ravaged them, ripping them apart with my teeth. Blood splattered all over me.
I didn't let it slow me down. I was going to get to Fagua and no one was going to stop me.
I ran faster than I ever had. I dodged and weaved and the wolves flew around me.
I was almost to her.
"Fagua," her mom shouted. "Give yourself up. Your father and I know what's best for you."
I shifted into my human form, my hands clenched into fists.
"You want to talk?" I said, addressing her mother. "We can talk. Get rid of the wolves and we'll talk."
"You fucking mutt!" Fagua's mother scowled. "You will not touch my daughter again."
"Mom!"
One of the wolves bolted for me, but instead of fighting it, I dodged out of the way. I ran as fast as I could, heading for Fagua.
"No!" her mom screamed. "Bring them back! Kill them!"
I tackled Fagua, knocking her out of the way right as the wolf pounced. It hit the ground where she had stood, its momentum carrying it toward the street.
I grabbed Fagua and started to drag her away from the fight.
"No!" She pulled against my hold. "I can't leave."
I ignored her, kicking aside a wolf.
Her magic snapped and crackled around us. "Don't make me hurt you, Husk." Her voice shook.
I dropped her arm and spun around to face her. "Are you serious? You and I both know what happened last time you used your magic. It nearly killed you."
Fagua squared her shoulders, lifting her chin. "I have to try."
"No, you don't." My gut screamed at me to throw her over my shoulder and jog back to the car on the other side of the woods. But I know if I did, she would never forgive me for it, and I already knew from experience she can hold a grudge. Hell, she was still mad at me for locking her in the penthouse when we first met.
She met my glare and didn't back down.
I heaved out a breath past the tightness in my chest. "You're the most difficult woman I've ever met."
"I know." She laughed, her watery smile playing across her lips. "But you wouldn't have me any other way."
"Fine." My heart raced at how stubborn she was and how she was going to get us all killed. "But you need to control your magic or it's going to get you killed."
"I'm not a child, Husk," she snapped.
There was no time to answer her. Wolves were everywhere, jumping at Winter and Mayia and Sky as magic pulsed around them.
"Stop," Fagua screamed, but it did no good. The wolves were out of control. Blood flying. Magic singeing the wolves' fur, choking the air. Didn't matter if Fagua's mother hit our team or her own pack.
