Vicki raises a brow and nods her head.

“You go, girl! There have been many girls in town trying to get his attention, and he’s interested in you. You better go for it.”

I sit back with a huff. “Ok, maybe you’re right. A practice date might be a good thing. So, who is this guy?”

“You already know him,” Vicki says.

“I already know him?”

Becca nods. “We went to school with him. Miles Brooks.”

“Miles Brooks,” I say, raising my voice in shock. “He was such a geek in high school. I cannot believe you guys are setting me up with Miles.”

“Well, he’s not anymore. In fact, he’s quite handsome,” Vicky says. “He helps his family run the hardware store, and women like him a lot. I think it’ll be good for you to get out there… dating has changed a lot since high school.” She laughs.

“Like you would know.” Becca glares at Vicki. “You haven’t dated in a while.”

“Neither have you.” Vicki strikes back.

“I know, but I have a reason,” Becca explains. “I’m going to wait to date until Jenna is older. I’m busy with my job and don’t have time to date.”

“Yeah, if that’s what you wanna keep telling yourself. I’m sure it has nothing to do with Jenna’s dad and the hope you have of him returning to town someday?”

Jess and I look at each other, shaking our heads.

“Fine, I guess,” I shout, cutting off their conversation, which I know will end in an argument like it always does when they bring up Jenna’s father.

“I’ll go on one date, but I can’t promise anything. And I’m not cutting my hair.” I need to get back to who I used to be… It might take a while, but I want to be that girl again.

Chapter Thirteen

Sam

I’matthedinerwiping down the counter when the bell rings.

I look up to see a strikingly handsome man enter. His hair’s a light shade of brown, he’s tall, I’d say maybe six feet. The jeans he’s wearing hug his toned legs. He takes off his black bomber jacket as he walks up to the counter with a grin on his face. “Hey,” he says, taking a seat. I can’t help but notice how his henley shirt molds against his muscular build.

“Hi, what can I get you?” I say, looking into familiar blue eyes.

“I’ll get a coffee, black. Three-egg omelette with whole wheat toast.”

He reaches his hand out to me. “I’m Lucas Prescott.”

Now I see where I know those eyes from. He has the same eyes as Josh.

I see the calluses on his hand as I reach out to return the greeting. “Sam, nice to meet you.”

He’s very handsome, and I waited to see if I was going to feel some sort of shock when I shook his hand. There was nothing, no shock, no shivers, nothing. I wondered if the feelings I felt when Josh touches me or stands close were because I haven’t been around any guys since my ex, but maybe it’s just Josh. That thought excites me and terrifies me at the same time.

The corner of his lip curls up. “I know who you are, thought it was about time I came to introduce myself. I’m the hot one, but you can obviously see that.”

Laughing, I shake my head. “I’ll place your order for you. Be right back.” I go to the window and place the order, grabbing the coffee, returning to pour a cup.

“So, have you had time to look around the town much since you’ve been back?”

I lean forward, resting my forearms on the counter. “I’ve done a little, not too much. Been busy getting settled here at the diner.”

He reaches his hand out to touch my arm. “Well, if you need someone to show you around, let me know.” He winks, and I can’t help but laugh. This one is definitely a charmer.
