“That new pesto chickenpasta has become my new favorite,” Shirley says as she taps her card. “I love it!”

“I’m glad to hear that, Shirl,” I reply with a wide grin. I wait for the receipt to print then rip it off and hand it to her. “Are you coming for the all-you-can-eat buffet on Saturday?”

“Of course. And I was thinking...maybe I could finally introduce you to my daughter. I’ve been telling her what a catch you are. Who doesn’t love a man who can cook? So, what do you say? Interested in being my future son-in-law?”

I chuckle at her brazenness. “Uh...sorry, Shirley but, unfortunately, my heart already belongs to another woman.”

“That’s a damn shame.” She pouts. “You’d be perfect for my Julie. She always goes for the struggling musician who ends up breaking her heart. She needs a good man in her life.” She sighs, still looking dejected. “So, who’s the lucky lady you’re dating?”

“Not dating...yet. It’s my ex. I’m in the process of...trying to convince her to give me a second chance.”

“Well, now I don’t know if I want to wish you luck or just pray it doesn’t work out.” A hearty laugh pops out of her. “I’m just kidding. Genuinely disappointed...but just kidding. You have a good day now.”
