The numbers on the door and the space between it and the next one gave the feel of an apartment building, but he hadn’t said they were visiting anyone. He knocked on the door but didn’t wait before opening it and walking in.

“Hello! I’m glad you made it.”

The woman standing in the empty room beamed at them. Her crisp pants suit and perfectly styled hair made Evelyn a little self-conscious of her jeans and t-shirt, but she was distracted by the wall of windows behind the woman.

Moving closer, she didn’t hear what Jett said to the woman as she looked out at the view. There was a low building between the one they were in and the river, then nothing but nature beyond. The field was lush with vegetation, greenery and blue sky stretching as far as she could see.

“Do you like it? It’s as close to Twinkle as I could get.”

That was why the building and view looked so familiar.

She looked up into golden eyes before glancing around the apartment. They’d talked about getting a bigger place, but she’d thought they would have to wait a while longer before moving. The inside was nice, but the view was breathtaking.

“It’s great, but can we afford it now?”

She’d listed her parent’s house for sale when she came to Eden, but due to its age it wasn’t getting much attention. They planned to save the money from the sale until they were ready for an actual house, so she didn’t have anything to help with the cost of moving.

Jett shrugged a shoulder, looking out the window.

“I had enough saved to cover what we need to move in, and you’ll be working soon. It’s more important to have the safety for your heat, even if things will be tight for a bit.”

It was like his words were a trigger. Her stomach cramped and sweat broke out along her spine. She watched as his nostrils flared and he pinned her in place with blown pupils.

“We’ll take it. Now.”

He turned and rushed to the woman still standing in the middle of the room, waving toward the door.

“I have the forms ready here.”

She held up a tablet with a confused look and Jett yanked it form her hand. He scribbled across the screen as he moved back to Evelyn, holding it out for her to sign her name beside his. She couldn’t focus on what it said, but she trusted Jett not to have her signing anything she shouldn’t.

“Here.”

He thrust it back at the woman, taking the keycard form her hand and crowding her toward the door.

“Yes, well—”

“Look, my mate is going into heat. Whatever it is, I’ll take care of it in a few days.”

The woman’s eyes rounded as her mouth formed an O.

“Oh, okay. Yes, that’s fine. Umm, good luck!”

She was happy to leave after Jett’s explanation. He closed the door behind her and turned to face Evelyn again.

“What do you need?”

She tried to focus, but his leather and spice scent was distracting her.

“Uh, the bedding. All of it.”

He strode to her and pressed a kiss to her forehead as another cramp squeezed through her middle. It wasn’t quite the rush Jett was making it out to be, but she appreciated his concern.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

He was gone before the cramp released her, the huff she let out the only sound in the empty apartment. They’d been waiting for her heat to come so he could claim her, and he apparently wasn’t going to waste any time now that it was here.

It hadn’t even been a question when she returned that she was his and they would bond during her next heat. It was why she hadn’t waited to return to Eden. She’d crossed her fingers that he would forgive her and came back as soon as she could.
