I could admit, for a second, that I loved the obsessive incubus when he knew my intentions instantly. He grabbed Reaven's throat, lust erupting from him so strong that she crashed to her knees with a moan of pain—not a sexy moan like X usually gave me.
I dove forward and caught Joseph before he could slam into the floorboards, grunting at his weight.
"Fuck, please,it hurts," Reaven rasped, tipping forward until her face pressed to the floor.
I was curious to know what would happen, but I didn't have time to gawp. I carefully lowered Joseph to the floor, brushed hair off his face, and grabbed Dev's invisible knife from my waistband. I didn't bother to make it visible before I stabbed it into Melle's stomach, carving a jagged, zigzag path. The blonde demon screamed, the sound sending power skating along my nerves, filling the pool of magic in my core.
"Youdaretouch my mate," I seethed. "You fucking bitch."
I grabbed a fistful of her hair, ignoring her claws trying to carve me apart. I twisted my hand, wrenching her hair out. But I might have been too hopped up on power, or pulled too hard, because part of her scalp peeled back. Oops.
Her next scream broke her voice.
"I could have warned you against this," Izan said across the room. "It's a bad idea to threaten someone's mate."
"Youdid it," Drill Bastard said petulantly.
"BecauseIknow how far to push. And beating him is decidedly too far."
A little shiver went down my spine for a reason I couldn't place.
X went to work on Neville as he tried to back away, and the man I thought could be a true friend collapsed to the floor with a scream as his cock exploded. I raised an eyebrow as blood flooded through the liquid of his trousers. And then X snapped his fingers and hit the guy with so much magic his whole body imploded.
Okay.
Not to self: don't get on X's bad side.
He turned to another demon who'd rushed at him with their bull horns aimed low, but I was distracted when Melle surged up, grabbing my knee and wrapping red, furious flame around my leg. I could have pretended to scream, but I had a part of Dev's soul, so even the worst fire wouldn't burn me.1
So, I smiled and let her see all my crazy. Her already pale face blanched. She was right to be scared. I stabbed my knife down and jammed it into her head, breaking her skull. The life left her eyes instantly, sending a deep shudder through my body and raising the hairs on my arms.
While I panted at the onslaught of magic, a ripple moved through me, and I startled, spinning around. Someone crossed one of my fiery footsteps. I realised too late they could work as an alarm system.
Early warning or not, I didn't have time to think as a big, white-skinned fucker with spikes all down his arms came at me with hate in his eyes.
I ducked out of the path of one arm, but ended up playing into his game; a big, wicked spike speared my shoulder, and I screamed as he twisted his arm to deepen the wound before wrenching free.
Son of a motherfucking cumstained shitheadbitch.
"Okay," I panted, pain making me see red even as my vision wavered. "Now you've pissed me off."
"Don't kill her," Izan commanded, and I flashed back to being in the barn with Jacko tormenting me, Dad telling him the same thing.
I shook my head to free the memory, needing to keep my head clear, but all I ended up doing was making myself dizzy. I wobbled from one foot to another, pain thumping through my shoulder and heat spilling down my side—blood. I didn't look at the messy wound; I couldn't find the courage to see what state I was in.
The pale fucker came at me again, but he exploded without warning. I gasped when bloody, fleshy bits splattered my clothes, my face, my dagger. X exploded him, and this time it was even uglier than Neville.
I retched, ninety percent sure I had brain matter in my hair.
"If we can't kill her, what's the point?" Drill Bastard demanded, still sounding like he was sulking at being scolded.
"Keep pushing her." They exchanged a significant look, but my vision was too blurry to make it out. "You know what our endgame is."
Drill Bastard sighed and nodded his dark green head. "Glim, Vauxhall, Tegan, weaken her. Kill the incubus."
I snorted. "Good luck withthat."
Hey, Dev,I said, sinking deep into my power and shuddering when hair lifted off my shoulders, floating in a cloud of purple, pink, and azure. We could use your help; everything kinda went to shit. Normally, I'm a total badass, but my vision's a little fucked and I'm starting to think I've been dosed with something.
