“Damn it, Z,” Webb groaned.
“What?”
“You can’t ask a girl how much she weighs.”
“I can’t? I don’t think I ever tried with Charlene. It never came up. It’s a taboo subject?”
“Sort of,” she said, taking pity on him. “More like it’s rude.”
“But how will I know whether you’ll fit a child’s booster seat?”
“The answer is that I’m an adult and I won’t. I also don’t need one.”
He didn’t reply.
Awesome.
Webb pulled up outside a market. She had never been so happy to go grocery shopping. It wasn’t that she didn’t like living in the compound. It made her feel safe. But she was also used to being around people. She’d missed the sun and fresh air.
Zander helped her out of his truck, lifting her down. “You missed being outside, didn’t you?”
“Yeah.”
“You should have told me. We can go out more often.”
“That would be nice.”
He gave her an abrupt nod. “Remember your rules.”
“I’m to stay by your side at all times.”
“Good, make sure you do, baby girl. Because I have no problem popping your butt.”
Holy heck balls.
They moved into the market, Webb grabbing a cart. “Can you guys take another one? Usually, I push two around but it will be easier if you have one and take half the list.” He handed over the piece of paper he’d ripped in two. Zander read through it quickly.
“Looks like we’re on perishables. Hold on to the cart.”
She shot him a look, and thought about protesting, but the look on his face convinced her not to.
They moved through the meat, then onto the dairy. She paused when they got to the ice cream. “Can we get ice cream?”
“What?” he asked.
She pulled open the freezer door and pulled out a tub of unicorn ice-cream. “It’s my favorite. Please.”
He shook his head. “It’s full of artificial colors and flavors. It’s not good for you.”
“I ate my weight in sprinkles last night,” she pointed out.
He sighed. “Fine. But that’s your one treat.”
She grinned and put the tub in the cart before giving him a kiss on the cheek. “Thanks, Daddy. You’re the best.”
“You’re a brat. Hand back on the cart.”
They made their way further along and she saw cans of chocolate mousse. Ooh, she needed one of those. Letting go of the cart, she reached up for one.
