“Thank you, baby girl.”

“You’re welcome, Daddy.”

“I have something more for you too,” he told her, setting her on her feet, then standing and taking her hand.

“More than all this?” she asked, waving her hand around at all the gifts.

“Yep.” He led her from the room.

To her surprise, they ended up outside her old bedroom.

“Close your eyes,” he commanded

“Okay, Daddy.” She closed them.

“Don’t open them until I say,” he added.

“I won’t, Daddy. I’m a good girl.”

“Course you are,” he agreed.

Warmth filled her. He grasped hold of her hand and led her forward. She trusted him not to let her walk into anything.

“Right, stop and open your eyes.”

Slowly, she opened her eyes, then she gasped in shock. “Daddy! What is this?”

It looked nothing like it had before. Gone were the furniture and white walls. One wall had forest wallpaper on it and the other walls had been painted a soothing dark green color. A large bench seat had been built under one of the big, fake windows. The screen now showed an image of a lake nestled between trees and some mountains in the background.

The bench seat was covered in cushions of all different colors. It looked so cozy that she immediately rushed over to test it out, throwing herself onto it. The bench seat was extra wide, and she sunk into the generous cushions.

“This is amazing! What is this?” She glanced around. The large TV was still on the wall, but now on the floor in front of it were four fluffy beanbags. Another area had been set up with a round table and chairs. Next to her was a set of bookshelves. She bent over, gasping as she read the titles.

“Daddy! These are all of my favorite books.”

“Everyone else has their own rooms here. This is for you. A place for your Little if she needs to be on her own, with just me, or with the others, if you want to invite them in. Over there is the gaming and TV area.” He waved toward the TV. “Then a place for board games or poker.” His hand pointed toward the table and chairs. “And this is your reading nook. I know that it’s not in a real mountain cabin by a lake. Maybe if I could build a cabin and make it secure, then I could give you that, but until then this is the best I can do.”

She threw herself at him, wrapping herself around him like a monkey. He caught her easily, like she knew he would.

“I don’t even remember when I told you about that.”

“It was when we first met. I interrupted you while you were in your happy place.”

She leaned back in his arms. “And you remembered that?”

He frowned. “Of course I did.”

Of course he did.

“Daddy, this is amazing,” she whispered tearfully. “This is . . . no one has ever done anything like this for me. I don’t need a real cabin by a real lake. All I need is you.”

“Those are happy tears?” he asked, staring down at her with a small smile.

“Daddy, you bet your fine ass they are.”

She grinned as he filled the room with laughter.

Definitely the best Christmas ever.
