“In case you don’t realize, you have no choice but to answer me,” he said in a low voice.

Zander bristled at his tone but before he could say anything, Keira spoke up.

“I’ve been searching for her ever since her husband, umm . . .” Keira trailed off.

“Was murdered. Couldn’t have happened to a more-deserving person. Yes. And?”

“And there was a photo of her on social media,” Keira blurted out. “It led us to her.”

“Was there? That can’t happen again. I knew I was being too lenient letting her live here. I’m losing my touch. So why did you want to find her? What do you want with her?”

“I don’t want anything. I just wanted to check that she’s all right.”

“As you can see, she is. I do find it curious that she told me she wanted nothing to do with you. Was that true? Or was she lying to protect you? Why would she protect you?”

“I don’t know,” she whispered. “I really don’t. Please don’t hurt Zander.”

“I’m fine, baby girl,” he reassured her. But he really wanted to hurt this motherfucker for scaring her.

“What are you after?” Honey asked. “Why are you watching Angie? You had to have cameras on her, right? That’s how you knew Keira and Zander were there today? Is someone guarding her? Or did she tell you about their visit?”

Keira let out a strangled noise. Fuck, he hoped that Angie hadn’t been the one to tell him.

“Angie is my insurance policy, of course I’d be interested in who is visiting her and what they want.”

“Insurance policy?” Zander asked. What did that mean?

“My client hired me to find his daughter and to take down a trafficking ring. Now, normally I don’t do things like that, but I’ve earned a lot of bad karma in my life, so I’m trying to turn things around.”

“And you think this will get you good karma?” Honey asked.

The insane man turned to Honey. Fuck, she needed to learn when to shut up.

“I haven’t hurt anyone. We’re just having a conversation. And Angie has been very well taken care of. All I have asked of her is to keep her head down and not contact anyone from her old life.”

“How is she an insurance policy?” Webb asked.

“I tracked her down because I hoped she might have some information that would help me take down the human trafficking ring. Unfortunately, she knew next to nothing about it.”

“Why would she have that information?” Zander asked.

“Because her husband, Fergus Bartolli, regularly bought women from the auctions.”

“Oh God, that’s disgusting,” Keira said. “If Angie knew anything, I’m sure she’d tell you.”

“Would you?” he asked.

“Yes, of course. But I don’t know anything.”

The man hummed.

“I don’t know anything about Bartolli and a human trafficking ring,” Keira said in a panicked voice. “Look, I was trying to get her safely away from Bartolli. I thought one of Bartolli’s guys might help me, he stole some information from Bartolli but then he lost it.”

Keira, be quiet.

He didn’t say it out loud, but he didn’t want this guy to be interested in her. And he had a feeling he was now very interested.

“You have any idea where he lost that information? Maybe Bartolli took it back.”
