“No, I was there the morning after he lost it.”
“Interesting.”
How was that interesting?
“If Angie doesn’t know anything, then why are you still watching her?” Zander asked.
“Like I said, she’s an insurance policy. There are things I can’t get access to. But Fergus Bartolli’s son can.”
“I don’t understand,” Keira whispered. “How could Angie help you make Bartolli’s son do anything?”
“Oh, think about it.”
Bartolli’s son was interested in Angie?
“Harm her and I will come after you,” Zander warned.
The other man looked him up and down. “You know, you kind of remind me of me. Anyway, like I said. I won’t hurt her. I need her. I’ve turned over a new leaf. I no longer kill innocents. Those who aren’t innocent, though . . . ”
He drew a card out of his pocket. “I’m going to leave my number. If you have any more information for me, especially anything that might help me with my quest to take down this human trafficking ring, call this number. I’ll warn you not to attempt to find me. I’m not so easily found and if you try, you won’t be so innocent in my mind anymore.”
The lights suddenly went off then smoke filled the room. Zander immediately dropped and rolled toward Keira. He heard the others call out.
“Coming in,” he called to Webb. He came out in the right place despite his visibility issues. Grabbing Keira, he kept her down low as he made his way to the door. He figured they weren’t in danger of being shot, the sniper could have shot them at any time. But he was still on high alert as they exited the door. He covered her body as Honey and Webb left the room behind them.
“Let’s go. Now!”
Glancing down, he saw that Keira was in bare feet. She was coughing hard.
“We have to get to Angie before he does,” he said to Webb and Honey as he picked Keira up with one arm, holding her on his hip.
“What about our stuff?” Webb asked. “I’ll go grab the rest of the weapons and our ID.”
“And Squeaks!” Keira cried. “Please.”
Webb nodded and pulled his sleeveless shirt off before wrapping it around his mouth. People were starting to awaken and they needed to get out of here. Zander and Honey moved together to get to the truck. Keira clung to Zander, coughing into his shoulder.
“Is he going to hurt Angie?” she asked as Zander climbed into the back of the truck with her.
“I don’t think he’ll hurt her,” Honey told her, getting into the driver’s seat and pulling up close to the stairs. Webb rushed down the stairs with their stuff. Luckily, they packed light.
“Let’s go,” Zander said when Webb was in the vehicle. “He has a head start.”
“What is he going to do?” she asked.
“He’ll move her somewhere else,” Zander said grimly.
“Oh God. I shouldn’t have told him the truth!”
“He would have moved her anyway, Kiki,” Webb told her with sympathy in his voice. “And you had no choice.”
“He . . . that red dot . . . he would have shot Zander?” she cried.
Zander slid over to her, belting her in. It was a testament to his shock that he hadn’t seen to her safety already.
“I don’t know,” Zander said grimly. “Fuck, did you get the card, Webb?”
“Yeah,” Webb said. He pulled out a card. “All it’s got is a phone number on one side and a picture of a fox on the other. Fuck! You don’t think . . .”
