“Yes, thanks, Prof. Really… enjoyable,” I finished lamely.

He quirked an eyebrow at me. “But not as enjoyable as Professor Waggoner’s lectures?”

I gave a sheepish shrug. He didn’t seem to mind too much.

“I’ll be sure to let him know that you missed his presence here in class.”

I deliberately did not correct his assumption that I hadn’t seen Waggoner or that I wasn’t about to rush through my to-do list so I could get back home to my omega. I hoped he’d managed to make his lunch without too many problems. I had thought about making it for him but I didn’t want him to think I was babying him.

Professor Gatwick was eyeing me carefully. I got the bad impression that he could see right through me. That would be awkward.

“I hear you were the one who witnessed Professor Waggoner being mugged. Is that right?”

“Yes.”

“And did you see anything significant?”

“You mean other than some dickhead alpha punching an omega to the ground? No. I didn’t see their face. I think they were wearing some kind of mask.”

“Hmm.”

“What?”

“And did you happen to see which way they ran afterwards?”

“Between the Business block and Engineering. The alleyway that cuts between them.”

I was familiar with it as a shortcut from my Engineering class to the canteen and, during the day, it was well lit and people walked back and forth no problem. At night, though, it was pitch black and there was no CCTV covering it. The mugger must have known that when they ran.

“Did they have a weapon?”

“Not that I saw. They used their fists.”

I tried to swallow down the growl that was coming out in my voice because I was aware that I was towering over the omega professor and I didn’t want to scare him.

“Very well, Mr. Morelli. That will be all, thank you.”

“Bye, Prof.”

I left, hurrying to reach the library. I wanted to get back to my omega as soon as I could.

Chapter 13: Waggoner

The doorbell rang and I jerked awake. A pain shot through my neck in protest at the sudden movement. I’d fallen asleep with my head hanging at an awkward angle – nothing like the perfect nap I’d taken snuggled up against Liam.

The doorbell rang again. And again.

Whoever it was, they were impatient.

“Alright, alright, I’m coming.”

I stood up, rubbing my neck to ease the stiffness as I shambled through the apartment to the front door.

The doorbell rang again when I reached it and I opened it, annoyed.

Alder was on the doorstep and he spoke before I could.

“Finally! I’ve been out here for years.”
