“Hey. Willa? You’re OK. I’ve got you.”
It’s the Great Wolf.
It has to be.
I’d always envisioned the mythical being that supposedly created our kind as male, but I’m fine with being wrong. A lady wolf taking me to the great beyond is far better.
Light.
So much bright light.
Like Catholics talk about, and if my Great Wolf is taking me to the Jesus heaven and not to some great snowy mountain in the sky…
“Willa, open your eyes.”
Cold. Wet. Heavy.
“Willa!”
A sting across my cheek.
And I finally do as the voice asks and open my goddamn eyes.
Three women hover over me.
The Great Wolf is three women?
No.
I know these women.
It’s my vampire friends and the other one.
The demon slayer.
“Hi?”
“Hey! You’re lucky I got here in time to drag you and your mate’s souls out of the between realm.” Lily smiles at me, auburn hair blowing in the wind.
“What do… what?” I try to get up, but Rafe and Jonah still lie piled on top of me.
“Don’t worry. They’ll come around soon.”
What the fuck is happening?
“Hey, you. You doing OK?”
Rook’s voice is like a song to my heart. I poke a hand out of the mass of bodies and grab him tight.
“What the fuck is happening?” I ask.
“Fuck if I know,” Rook says. “But you have a shitload of people happy that it did.”
“It’s simple, really,” Sunny says, her designer heels completely submerged in the fresh snow. “Lily’s mated to a demon who used to collect souls for a living. She knows a thing or two about putting a soul back in a person’s body.”
“You mean…”
Eden grins at me. “Yup. You’re not leaving us that easily. Even if you want to, you’re stuck with us.”
