Kendra’s Comeuppance by Raisa Greywood

Chapter One

Mark

He rubbed his forehead, trying to ease a budding tension headache as he reminded himself he loved Kendra Hall forever and ever, amen. Hell, he’d proposed marriage to the woman. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but damn if she didn’t push the boundaries.

“So let me get this straight. Despite our budget, hours of meetings, and a plan, you had Sadie start the spa a full year early?”

She gazed at him and crossed her legs. Her foot, bearing a freakishly expensive, but oh so sexy shoe, swung. “Her crew is already here. I ran the numbers, and it’s about ten grand cheaper to have them do the work now.”

“How are we going to pay the overhead, Kendra? Did you add a line item to the budget when no one was looking?”

“Of course not!”

“Then where is the money coming from?”

Rolling her eyes, she slammed her notepad to her desk. “There won’t be any overhead. I had Sadie put in electric, plumbing, and drywall. She’s just going to prime the drywall, and we’re not buying any fixtures until we’re ready to open.”

“And?”

“And what?” She glanced at the time and scowled, then grabbed her notepad. “I’m late for a meeting. We’ll discuss this later.”

She walked out before he could stop her, and he cursed softly. Assuming the jobs she mentioned were all she’d had done, it probably was cheaper and less disruptive to do it now, but she was overstepping.

Although Kendra was brilliant and hiring her had been the best decision the Horsemen had ever made, the idea should have been presented to him, Ryan, Jake, and Sean first. He doubted anyone would tell her no because it was a good plan. Hell, Ryan would have told her to get on with it.

Unfortunately, she’d gone too far and was taking more authority than her position allowed. After leaving her office, he strode past the restaurant to the dungeon, then texted his friends to invite them to an impromptu meeting.

Jake showed up first, followed by Sean, and then Ryan.

“What’s up?” Jake grabbed a bottle of water from the mini fridge and flopped to the couch.

“Sounded like an emergency,” Sean said, propping a hip against the desk.

“We have a problem with Kendra,” Mark replied.

“Is she okay?” Ryan asked.

“She’s fine.” Mark sighed and sat behind the desk. “She had Sadie start work on the spa.”

“What?” Ryan cursed and slapped the desk with both hands. “Are you kidding me? What the hell is she thinking?”

“We can’t open until next year,” Sean said. “She knows that.”

“She said it was plumbing, electric, and drywall, and it would be cheaper to have it done while the contractor is here.”

“Probably less trouble too.” Jake scratched his jaw, then rested his elbows on his knees. “I mean, we’re already under construction.”

Mark nodded. “I’m not saying it’s a bad idea. Getting the space prepped now is more efficient, but she did it without talking to us first.”

“So, what are we going to do?” Ryan asked.

“No idea.”

“It’s never easy to remember that woman is submissive,” Sean muttered. “Sometimes, I think she forgets too.”

Sean had his own problems with a woman who didn’t behave, but Mark wasn’t concerned about what was going on with their contracted computer guru and all-around troublemaker, Gabby Knox. As long as she was locked down and safe, she was Sean’s problem.
