“We are better than that, and we aren’t everyone else. We set our path. Understand?”

It took more talk and more swats before he got what he wanted. “Yes. Okay. I guess I don’t have a choice but promise me it isn’t because you don’t want me.”

“I’ve been hard every day of my life since meeting you. It would make my life easier to take you multiple times, but I have to live with myself and now is not the right time.”

“Okay.”

Jacob had stopped spanking and was rubbing her warmed backside.

“Um, can you let me down now?” asked Sage.

“Oh no, my girl. That was only the first part. You are in this position because you put my woman in danger, and that will never happen again. I intend to impress upon your ass just how scared you made me. Don’t you ever do that shit again.”

The actual spanking began, and Sage cried and begged before Jacob finished instructing. “Never again will you put my girl in danger on purpose. Understand me?”

She nodded. “I promise, I promise. It hurts Jacob.” Her hands flailed and tried to create a barrier between his hand and her bottom.

“It’s supposed to, so you remember the lesson, and I don’t lay awake nights worried about your safety.”

Jacob loved the way Sage clung to him. He pulled her down into his arms and kissed her until all thought of pain had subsided. Finally, he pulled back and hugged her, slowing his breathing. His libido, though, was in overdrive. He’d live.

“Now, ready to go home?”

“Not really.” Her nod contradicted her words.

Jacob lifted his hand. “I can bounce my hand off that sassy ass some more.”

“No! No, I’m good. And you have a paddle for a hand.”

“Well, next time you do something dangerous on purpose, it will be on the bare.”

“Yeah, not happening, big guy, unless you intend to end with a big finale that I want. But I’ll follow the rules.”

“Good. We can discuss them on the way home.”

Jacob handed Sage up into the truck and buckled her in. She screwed up her face and wiggled a little. He laughed.

The following year, they were good until he, Carter, and Stryker’s graduation, when Sage and Jacob had their first experience. He’d given her a bed, but years later, he cringed at the primitive cabin they had shared their first time.

Jacob looked up and found himself in the same corner of the ranch where he’d taken her innocence. He stared at the wooden house in the distance. There wasn’t time for him to look inside today, but someday soon. Maybe he’d bring Sage.

Time to get back to reality and start his work to make the cattle ranch operate more efficiently. He also had some work to help the lodge see more profit, and the Dude part of the ranch to draw more visitors. One last look at the cabin and Jacob turned back. Good thing he’d walked his horse out because now he would hitch a ride on his companion’s back to head home. Jacob hopped on his stallion’s back and gave the horse his lead. All creatures instinctively headed home, and Jacob was no different.

Now to claim what was his if he could. Sage. He was a patient and persistent man, ready for a fight if necessary.

Chapter Two

The next couple of days were spent setting up his temporary office in the building they creatively called the “Office.” The interior was well thought out. Stryker led him in and gave him the fifty-cent tour. Walking through the front door, you were immediately in the reception area, a half-circle room where all doors and one hallway led from and emptied into. There were half a dozen comfy office chairs in the space. Avery, Stryker’s fiancée, sat here to the right and in front of Stryker’s office. She was the pulse of the place and could answer most questions.

Four offices spanned from the reception area and a long hallway to the entry’s immediate left. In the hallway was an alcove that held a coffee/tea station. Further down was a meeting room on the left, and at the very end, a large storage closet and a small break room that didn’t appear to be used often.

“Now feeding off Avery’s domain, in this half circle, from right to left, is my CEO's office, Renee’s personnel/lodge operations office, your office, and Declan and Teagan’s finance/accounting office.”

“This is a nice setup. I like the half-circle concept. I bet Richard had something to do with that.”

“You’d think, but actually, it was Mam. She wanted more harmony, so she decided this front area would encourage that. Also, she tried to put a round conference table in the back, but it didn’t hold as many as we wanted, so she settled for an oval.”

“Nice.”
