They left a note on the office board, but Stryker was gone with Jacob to meet up with some investors for a project Jacob was advising on. Declan was doing a seminar. So no one would be in the office to see the message. Carter was taking out supplies to the out cabins, and Callen went with Seamus to Rapid City for winter supplies.

Renee, Avery, Teagan, and Sage packed a fun lunch, grabbed two survival kits the guys had them carry into the woods, and off they went to a little place Renee had found as a teenager.

“It’s relaxing, sheltered, and not so far that if the weather changes or we get too cold, we can get home fairly quickly.”

“Sounds perfect,” Sage said.

Once they arrived about a mile back into the forest, the women settled in and relaxed, having lunch by a mountain stream.

“You’ll like Kailani,” said Renee to Sage. “She is like the rest of us, too independent for our own good but not intending to change.”

Avery laughed. “You say that now, Renee, but things will change. When you find the man of your dreams, and he denies you something for your safety, I want to be right there waiting for you to tell him to suck eggs.”

Teagan joined in. “Yeah, because I promise you, one ‘don’t you dare’ look from him will make your panties wet, and your thinking change from no way to whatever you say, dear.”

Renee said, “You should have seen when we met Kai working at Cattleman’s and Seamus found out.”

Avery shook her head. “That man nearly lost his mind.”

“Sounds like Jacob when I said I wasn’t going to change my lifestyle for him.”

Teagan leaned in. “Don’t leave us waiting for his response.”

“Yeah, well, he convinced me it was better if I decided that adjustments would be necessary.”

“He spanked you for that?” Avery, who had her fair share of arguments that ended in a hot butt, asked.

“Nope, worse.”

Renee looked confused. “Worse?”

Teagan grinned. “I know. He edged you.”

Sage groaned. “It is the worst punishment ever.” The ladies laughed.

Out of the brush and old growth came a man brandishing a gun. The women stopped mid-conversation.

“Flynn! What are you doing?”

Sage hoped her voice didn’t quiver as much as her insides were doing. She knew he didn’t hunt or live out of town, but he did own a couple of guns he said he took to target practice. He had never cleaned them since she’d known him. Jacob and the other Red Eagle gang were constantly cleaning theirs. She wondered if he knew how to shoot well enough not to kill one of them.

“I won’t hurt anyone. I only want Sage.” He waved the gun around. “Jacob Red Eagle stole Sage from me. She’s my woman, and that just won’t be tolerated.”

“I left you, sent you packing before Jacob came to see me. I hadn’t seen him for years before then. You are the one that messed things up. Hurting those men like that.”

He looked longingly at Sage. “When I saw you with them, I knew they wanted you. I knew they were trying to entice you to leave me and go with them. Like Red Eagle.”

Sage saw the other women poised to do something to distract Flynn. She thought she might be able to get through to him, and he would just leave. Maybe. When Jacob found out, he would absolutely beat her ass, and she’d let him if she were safe in his arms.

“Flynn, it wasn’t like that. They had girlfriends already. I’m just friends with them.”

“You don’t know what men think when they look at you. Red Eagle made me a laughingstock, and hell, if I don’t prove him wrong, then who will people be whispering about when he passes by? No, old Flynn will have the girl.”

“Flynn, it’s okay. I’ll go with you if you just leave the ladies alone.”

Flynn didn’t act as though he heard Sage and continued his rant. “Red Eagle ruined my reputation. You can’t leave me after I already told everyone we were engaged.”

“But we weren’t Flynn. It wasn’t true.”
