“It could have been. You would have stayed with me if he didn’t show up. I’ll take care of him too. Later, when he is deep in his grief that you left him. Then I’ll get him. He’ll beg me to kill him because it would decimate his pride. Like mine was.”

“I said I’d go with you if you leave everyone else alone.”

He grabbed for Sage, but she moved, and the women repositioned in more of a semi-circle but stayed close enough to each other to reach out and touch.

“Do you even know how to shoot that thing?” asked Sage, who was the only one talking, keeping Flynn occupied. She was relying on the others to put a plan into place.

“If I’m close enough, it won’t matter.” Then he lunged at Teagan, grabbing her by her long hair and pulling her towards him. The women froze.

Sage lost it. “Let go of her, asshole. We’ll all jump you and see how you survive. There are four against one, and we know how to shoot, Flynn. I’d leave if I were you before the guys get here.”

“Nice try, but they aren’t coming. I made sure of it by watching each one of them leave. And the guys in one of your barns were talking about how all the bosses would be busy for the morning at least. That was all I needed to know. Then, you made it so simple by going off by yourselves. I have to thank you for making this so easy.”

Sage looked at Teagan, and she was mouthing something. Finally, she understood. Sage glanced around and hoped the others understood her because the plan was set. Sage knew she was in for a whale of a spanking after this, but she’d do anything to get Teagan away from Flynn and them all safe. She’d sacrifice herself without a second thought.

Then Avery and Renee began talking about irrelevant things, and when Teagan joined in, Flynn yanked her hair hard. She cried out. The others stopped talking and stared at Flynn as though this was a paranormal event. It gave Sage anxiety, but she did the same, staring at him intensely.

Flynn got nervous. “Move it, Sage, come over here, or this redhead won’t see her big strong man again. And it will be all your fault.”

His eyes kept darting back to the two women staring at him as though he had to worry about them going crazy or something. Suddenly, Teagan went limp, and it startled Flynn into dropping her. That was the women’s signal to attack. Teagan nailed his crotch, and he immediately dropped the gun. Sage did a karate chop to his neck when he was bent over in pain. Renee kicked him in the face, and he fell to his knees. Avery grabbed the gun.

Flynn was frightened, shocked, and disoriented.

“Good teamwork, ladies.” Sage turned to the man no longer in control. “You’re so pathetic. I’d get out of here fast, Flynn,” said Sage. “Because when we get back down to the main ranch and tell them what you did, expect every man down there, Red Eagle or employee, to come hunting for scalp. Your scalp.”

He limped away, beaten, but the women knew that would only last so long. “We need to get out of here,” said Renee. “I know another way back to the house.”

On the way back down the side of the mountain, the women discussed how they could share this little adventure with the guys and avoid aching backsides.

“I’ll take the blame,” said Sage. “It was because of me anyway.”

“You haven’t been around long enough to know these guys won’t bite. We all left without making sure, personally, that one of them knew where we were going,” said Avery. “Been there, done that before.”

“And I am pretty sure leaving a note in an empty office won’t be enough,” said Renee.

Teagan nodded. “But honestly, I don’t care if Declan gets his pound of flesh so long as he holds me.”

The other women agreed. “I’m sorry I asked you all to come in defiance of the guys. I never meant to put you all in harm’s way. They’ll have to believe me because it really was my fault. I wanted to prove I could do things without Jacob putting a fence around it.”

Avery patted Sage on the hand as they began to gather their things. “It will be fine, honestly. Just talk to Jake and tell him that you need more freedom without worrying about him being upset about things. And I’d have that conversation before the spanking. It will work towards lightening your punishment if he feels like he was part of the cause this happened.”

Renee nodded. “God, yes. If you can, just make sure you don’t tell him he’s too restrictive. Find a way to say that you feel like you’re suffocating – even though you know he means well, it’s too much, and you need to stretch your wings sometimes.”

Teagan laughed. “Good luck with that. I tried it with Declan, and he basically told me to get used to it.”

Once home, the women cleaned up, sent messages to the men, and put on a few stew pots. Renee made bread.

“It will mellow them out if they smell stew and fresh bread. It wouldn’t hurt if we baked a spice cake, either.”

Sage smiled. Renee had been dealing with these men for a long time. She took notes.

Avery took the lead and told the story as the guys roped their women into their bulky arms. Unfortunately, the guys weren’t as impressed with the good smells as Sage had hoped they would be. To say the boys weren’t happy would be oversimplifying things, but there were only a few curses and grumbles during the telling.

“Avery, we will be discussing this later.”

Avery didn’t answer, just walked into Stryker’s arms. Jacob kissed Sage, who had been pulled tight to his chest from the moment he walked into the room. Even Renee allowed Carter to lasso her into his protective solid hold for a few minutes.

He spoke low and close to her ear, pulling Sage to a corner of the living room. “There will be consequences for being unsafe.”
