“You’ve been holding back on us I see,” Rebecca said with a smirk.
I blushed and wasn’t sure what to say. What could I tell my closest friends? I would be lying if I said it didn’t embarrass me to have to use the ‘S’ word around them. But I also was giddy over the fact that I was head over heels in love.
“Well…Caine and I are in love,” I answered.
Rebecca clapped her hands together over her heart and nearly squealed. “I am so happy for you two! It’s like a love story.”
Coley poured two glasses of wine and handed them to Rebecca and Kendall. She looked at me and smiled proudly. “I couldn’t be happier. Just think, you may be my sister someday.”
I scanned the crowd and made eye contact with Caine from across the crowded living room. He beamed proudly at me and then returned to the conversation he was having. Seeing him from across the room, and knowing he was mine, made me happier than I could have imagined. He looked up from his conversation to look my way again. He studied me a moment assessing if I was all right and gave me a wink and a large smile. I was absolutely giddy.
I looked back at my friends. “I really hope so. I could marry him tonight. I swear I have never been so happy,” I gushed.
“Enough of the sappy shit, tell us the juicy, sexy stuff,” Kendall blurted as she emptied her first glass of wine and was pouring herself another.
Coley gasped and covered her ears with her hands. “Oh, God, no, this is my brother remember!”
I laughed before answering. “It’s perfect. He’s perfect. I couldn’t be happier,” I said, sounding like a love-struck school girl.
Before Kendall could ask for more information, we were distracted by Matt entering the room. Everyone started to wish him happy birthday. He politely thanked people and eventually made his way to where we were all standing.
“Thanks, Coley, for throwing this party for me. You really shouldn’t have,” Matt said sincerely.
Kendall moved closer to Matt. “Happy Birthday, Matt,” she said in a sweet, demure voice.
Her behavior was not lost on her friends. We knew Kendall well enough to see she had a huge crush on Matt. And from what I could tell, it seemed Matt had a crush on her, too.
Matt nodded at Kendall. “Thanks.” He turned to me and said, “Congrats on hooking up with Caine. You two seem right for each other.”
I blushed at the compliment. “Thank you.” I wasn’t sure what else to say. I was glad I had at least one of Caine’s friends on my side.
Matt was quickly pulled away by other friends who all wanted his attention. As he was walking away, he turned his head and made eye contact with Kendall and smiled. All of us saw it, and we couldn’t help but tease Kendall. It was nice to have the conversation off me and Caine and onto a new budding love interest. I used this welcome distraction to scan the room for Caine. As silly as it felt, I missed him. I didn’t see him over all the bodies, so I decided to excuse myself from the group and made my way to another room to look for him.
I came around a corner and stopped when I heard Caine talking to one of his friends I didn’t know. I could tell the conversation was about me. I should have made my presence known, but once again my curiosity took over. I hid behind the wall and listened intently.
“You’re one lucky man, Caine. I think you’ve found yourself a keeper,” the unknown friend complimented. I was happy I seemed to have won over another friend.
“You don’t have to tell me. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have her in my life. She really is everything I’ve been looking for,” Caine boasted. His comment made me melt.
“So you’re not just a bitch, you’re a snooping bitch!” I jumped at the venomous voice behind me. I turned around to see Sara standing with her hands on her hips. She had rage in her eyes and looked like she was getting ready to pounce.
I had no idea Sara would be at the party. And even if I had, I wouldn’t think she would have such anger directed toward me. I didn’t break them up. I certainly didn’t get with Caine until after they were done. But clearly from the way Sara glared at me, she thought otherwise.
“Excuse me?” I asked.
“You heard me, you little tramp. You intended on being with Caine from the very beginning, didn’t you? You’re nothing but a slut,” Sara spat.
“Sara, I know you’re mad, but I didn’t steal Caine away. You lost him on your own.”
“No, I didn’t! We were great before you moved in. I knew from the very beginning that you wanted Caine,” she yelled.
I took a deep breath to calm my temper. I tried to see the situation through her eyes. It could seem like I had a master plan to get in the way and steal Caine. To Sara, I was the bad guy.
“Listen, Caine and I have a lot of history. Maybe we always did have feelings for each other, but we never acted on them while you two were together,” I explained.
Sara shoved her finger into my chest. “You are nothing but a dirty whore. You can’t give Caine what he wants and what he needs. You will mess this relationship up just like your marriage. You will lose him, because you aren’t equipped to keep him.”
Her comment stung. I no longer could contain my anger.
