“Morning, my sweet boy.” He placed a soft kiss on my shoulder. “Do you want to go back to sleep, or are you ready for your surprise?”

Had I wanted to go back to sleep nestled in his embrace? Absolutely. That was until he offered me a surprise. I wasn’t about to let a surprise go ungiven. And even if I wanted to, my body was instantly wide awake at the mere thought of it.

“Surprise?” I rolled in his arms. “Is it a trip to the zoo?”

We had talked about going to the zoo a few times but, between weather and schedules, it hadn’t happened yet.

He tapped the tip of my nose. “No. It’s not the zoo, but we can add that in there if you want.”

I bobbed my head up and down. “I want. I want.”

“Then you’d best be getting up and ready for your surprise.” I bounded out of bed and ran into the bathroom, noticing the shower was already wet. Daddy had already been up and showered, which meant he was working on my surprise. Or, at least, I assumed it did. I’d find out soon enough.

Daddy had left out everything I needed to get started for the day, including my favorite toothpaste. Little gestures like that made me feel so loved. Sure, Marco did the big things, too, the things anyone would be happy with, but more than that, he paid attention. I would gather nobody, not even former roommates, would know my preferred brand of toothpaste, but Daddy did.

I was a lucky boy.

It didn’t take me long to shower and come out into the kitchen wearing the robe Marco had left out for me. It smelled beyond delicious, the fresh cooked-bacon aroma almost causing me to let out a moan of delight. I was king of the pre-cooked bacon, and this was not that.

“Bacon!” I sounded like the old dog treat commercial and found myself giggling at the realization.

“Have a seat, and Daddy will bring you your breakfast.”

I bounced over, kissed his cheek, and then took my seat. He popped the microwave open and pulled out a plate.

“I kept it warm for you,” he explained as he set it down in front of me. “I hope you like it.”

He’d made me waffles and crispy bacon, but not just any waffles and bacon. No, these were waffles shaped like the race cars we liked to play with. I didn’t even think twice before taking one for a test drive.

“How did you do this?” I looked up at him, in awe of the culinary delight he set before me.

“Eat your breakfast, and I will show you my secrets.” Marco pointed to the plate, and I snatched a piece of bacon and bit off a hunk.

“I eating.” My mouth was full and my words jumbled, but I didn’t care. I had car waffles.

“That you are. Syrup?” Daddy asked, and I nodded.

Daddy went back to the counter and brought over a small dish with some syrup in it, large enough for me to dip my cars in.

I drove one of my cars across the plate and over to the dish, crashed it into the lake of syrup then brought it to my mouth for a big bite. This was going to be a messy meal, and I didn’t even come close to caring. It was too fun not to enjoy. If Daddy wanted me to be neat, he’d have made something else.

“Do you want to see how I made these now?” Daddy asked after the last bite of my first car had been shoved into my mouth.

“Yes, Daddy.” I reached for the second car and made little engine noises.

He went over to the counter and came back with a waffle iron. It wasn’t until he opened it up for me that I figured out that it wasn’t just a normal waffle iron. Nope. It was one designed specifically to produce cars.

“They make these?” My eyes went wide.

“And ones with animals and dinosaurs and all kinds of shapes, including one shaped like your favorite plastic bricks. Do you want to look at the choices after we’re done eating?” He closed the appliance and pushed it to the side, taking the seat across from me.

“After the zoo?” Because…zoo.

“Yes, after the zoo, my good boy.”

He picked up his coffee and took a long sip as I drove my car around the plate. I could get used to this.

It turned out to be a perfect day for the zoo. The cool breeze had some of the animals that tended to be lazy in the sun, running around, the crowds were minimal, and the train was running. Best of all, I was with my daddy. What more could I ask for? Oh yeah, a waffle iron that would make my favorite blocks, which we ordered right before snuggle and nap time.
