“I heard you closed the Midwell deal. Congrats.”
“Adriana,” I sighed, while closing Michael’s door. “We don’t have to pretend to be friends. You don’t have to make small talk. It’s enough for you to just hand me Michael and be done with it.”
“I think being friends would be the best for Michael. He needs to see that his parents at the very least like each other.”
I scowled at her. “I don’t like you.”
Her hand shot out and grabbed mine. “I fucked up, okay? I really fucked up and I’m sorry.”
I ripped my hand from her grasp. “It’s a little too late for sorry.”
“Can we not fix this?”
“There is nothing to fix.”
The remorseful look in her eyes melted away and revealed a fiery fury. “You know you will lose custody of him. Why risk separation from your son.”
“The fact that you have to use my son to threaten me speaks volumes of the kind of woman you are, Adriana.” I stepped closer to her. “And I won’t lose Michael. I have everything under control. If you keep those threats up you will be lucky to even see him on holidays.”
She narrowed those caramel eyes that had once made my dick twitch. It was no secret that Adriana was a walking siren. With Hispanic genes that added to her exotic beauty she was any mans walking wet dream.
“You can’t keep a mother from her child.”
“Not if that mother is a gold digging psychopathic bitch.” My voice remained calm all the while she was getting more and more worked up.
“Do you want to know why I cheated, Gabriel?” People on the sidewalk were staring. “Do you want to know why I chose to go against my vows and begin a new relationship?”
“We are not talking about this in public. Goodbye Adriana.”
I walked around the car and headed to the driver's seat with a furious Adriana in tow.
“There were three of us in this relationship, Gabriel. Me, you and your fucking career. You were married to your work long before you were married to me. Everything was always about work for you. You barely saw me. You barely noticed me.”
“You are acting like this is something new Adriana. You knew how demanding my work was but you stuck around. And let’s not pretend like you didn’t stick around for my family name. I was a target for you. A key to getting into the top Society in Chicago and beyond. Let’s not act like you loved me for me.”
She clenched her jaw. “But I still loved you Gabriel. I. Still. Cared.”
“And so did I, Adriana.” That was the truth. Once upon a time I had loved Adriana. “You are the one that ended our marriage.”
“No, I didn’t Gabriel. Our marriage ended the moment work became more important than me.” She turned on her heel and stormed away. I had seen the misty look in her gaze. The way she was fighting back tears.
To some extent she was right. I had placed work above her. But that was what came with the job. A billion dollar company didn’t run itself.
I got in her car and drove away from her building. I kept stealing glances at Michael as I drove us home. So young and innocent. I tried to direct all my attention to him but Adriana’s words played over and over again in my mind.
MOVE IN DAY
Brianna
“The elevator has a crystal chandelier.” Ava exclaimed, her green eyes looking up at the thing in wonder. “How much do you think one of those crystals would sell for on eBay?”
“Ava!” Alana scolded her. “Our friend has basically sold her soul to the devil and you are thinking about stealing?”
I rolled my eyes and hitched the box in my hands higher. “Can you two stop? You are making me regret bringing you guys along with me.”
It was moving day and to say I was nervous would be an understatement. I was going to be living with Gabriel. Not only that but I would be playing his fiancée to the public.
“How can I stop when I am practically leading you to the slaughter. This man is just trying to work you right down to the bone. And this whole fake fiancée thing will only end in disaster. Surely there is a law somewhere against it.”
