"What the hell does that mean?" Nicky couldn't help it. Her anger slipped through. And that made Felix smile.
"It means exactly as I said it," Felix said. "Why are you wasting your time with me? You need to go see him."
Nicky hadn't seen her father in years. Maybe Felix somehow knew that, although she had no idea how he could.
Her father was the type of man to stay at home. Maybe he was just fishing. Maybe he just wasn't up to seeing his daughter.
But, maybe, he knew something.
"You're going to tell me what you know," Nicky said. "Otherwise, your time here is limited."
Felix laughed. "You know, Agent Lyons, you always were funny," he said. "But I think you're going to need to find another way to get me to talk. I'm not going to tell you anything."
It was a game. His game.
Maybe she had forgotten that at one time. But those times were over.
Nicky stood up from the table. "I'm done playing games with you," she said. "This is over."
"Nicky," Felix said. "Don't you want to hear about your sister?"
Nicky froze. Was he really going to talk now?
"Tell me what you know," she said.
"I could..." He grinned. "But you need to do one thing for me first."
"Oh, yeah? What's that?"
"Talk to your father."
Nicky scowled. Why did he want that so badly? What was his angle? She was sure this was all just a cruel joke. One thing was certain: coming here again was a mistake.
Felix wasn't going to tell her anything more. Maybe he didn't even know anything in the first place.
She stood up and turned around, then walked out of the room. She didn't turn around, knowing that Felix was still staring at her.
The guard, who sat behind the glass, unlocked the door so she could go through.
She walked away from the room, and she didn't look back.
She was done. Felix wouldn't talk to her anymore.
She'd tried to do the right thing. She'd tried to do what she thought was best. But this was the end of the road.
Nothing could lead her back to Rosie.
Unless...
Nicky navigated her way out of the prison. Back in the warm daylight, she made her way to her car and got in.
She closed the door and rested her forehead against it. Everything felt so fruitless.
Nicky raised her head and looked at her phone, sitting in the cup holder. I can't, she thought. It's not possible...
Felix was lying to her, toying with her. Nicky was sure of it. So why did part of her believe him?
Why did part of her suddenly want to talk to her father, who she'd been estranged from for so many years?
