She lied to me.

Aurora lied to me.

When Theo told me that all the law school and college students with her name didn’t look like her, I thought that maybe he didn’t know her well enough or that our facial recognition system glitched.

It’s already taken us too long to gain access to all the information we needed, and I’m too impatient to figure out what’s going on. Waiting for weeks just to find nothing would seriously piss me off.

I’ve gone through all the photos twice, and she really isn’t there and definitely isn’t going to London like she said. I expand my search to other colleges and careers, but I don’t find her there either. My eyes hurt from staring at the computer screen, but I keep going.

“Maybe she’s actually rich and going to college in some other country,” Theo says. “I’ll tell our tech team to see if they can get their hands on some more international records. London clearly isn’t it, but maybe she went to Paris, or Madrid, or—”

“No, I don’t think it’s that.” I don’t move my gaze off the screen. “I need to access high school records, both current and old ones.”

“Wait, do you think she’s still in high school?”

Fuck. I hope not. If she lied to me about her age, I won’t be happy. But that’s not the only thing that worries me.

She could be a spy, and I might have fallen straight into her trap. Would that even be possible? I notice girls who want something from me from a mile away. There’s just something about the way they talk and behave. Aurora isn’t like that.

If her name is even Aurora.

Shit!

“I don’t know what to think anymore,” I say. “But we’re going to find her and figure out who she really is. There has to be a record of her somewhere. Take those images of her we have from that time you tracked her down from me. I know they’re mostly grainy, but run them through all our systems. Her friend too.”

“Do you think she works for one of our enemies? Marcello? Your mother?”

“I don’t know.” And I don’t like it.

“Did she ask you anything? Did you tell her anything?”

That’s the problem. Who knows what game she’s playing? Maybe she’s going to reappear with some sob story so I’d take her with me and give her information to use against me.

But why hasn’t she accepted my offer right away? Could she have really managed to act so well, enough to trick me?

“No. We didn’t talk about anything important,” I say.

It doesn’t mean that isn’t exactly her game. Get me to think that she’s completely innocent. Won’t ask me anything until I tell her all myself.

It would be a good plan, but when I think about Aurora, I don’t see a manipulative spy. She couldn’t have faked everything. Not the look in her eyes.

“That’s good,” Theo says. “But do you think she planted something somewhere? In your room at Purple Pleasure? On your clothes?”

“No.” I would’ve found a bug if there was one. “Maybe it’s all just a big misunderstanding. She could’ve lied to me at first because she didn’t trust me. She couldn’t have known if I’d try to hurt her when we met. Then the lie stuck, and she didn’t want to risk telling me the truth.”

Does that mean she’s actually in trouble? If she’s not going away to study abroad and she’s not a spy, then why did she lie to me? She seemed happy with me. If it’s because of the person who hurt her...

I grit my teeth. I shouldn’t have let her leave. It was stupid to assume I’d easily find her and track her down. She and her friend suddenly disappeared, and my men lost them. Were my men just careless and easily distracted, or is Aurora not who I think she is?

“Maybe.” Theo shrugs. “Youarea little scary.”

I roll my eyes at him.

His phone buzzes. “Oh shit.”

“What?” I narrow my gaze at him.

“It’s Cole. He wants to talk to you. On the phone. Right now. Says it’s urgent.”
