“Um, she wants to meet with you. Alone.”
I let out a strangled laugh. “Yeah, right.”
“In the middle of a busy square in your territory.”
“What?”
“She says she has something very important to tell you that you’ll want to hear.”
I press my lips tightly together. “Marya knows where Aurora is.”
“Well, yeah, but I don’t think she’s going to share that information.”
“Can we make sure the area is safe? No snipers. No random assassins. No surprises.” If I have to meet with Marya to get Aurora back, I’m going to do it.
At this point, I’ll do anything. Marcello and Marya have me exactly where they want me. If they want me in exchange for Aurora, I’ll gladly go with them, but only if Aurora’s safety is guaranteed.
“Yeah. It’s doable,” Theo says. “Are you sure you want to meet with her? It might be a distraction.”
“We don’t have any clues. We have nothing. Marya knows something. I’m sure of it. She’s going to use it now to get what she wants, or she wouldn’t request to meet with me.”
“Okay then.” Theo’s forehead is creased with worry, his eyes filled with an emotion I can’t identify.
But I don’t have time to think about that now.
All I want is Aurora. Safe and sound.

Marya waitsfor me in the middle of the square, as agreed. As I stride toward her, I don’t know what to think. It’s the first time I’ll see my birth mother face-to-face. She’s taller in real life. Her shoulder-length dark brown hair and her eyes are almost black.
I curl my fists. It takes all of my willpower not to pounce on her and force her to tell me where Aurora is. But the woman in front of me is anything but frail and weak. She’d never tell me anything by force, even if I threatened to put a bullet in her.
“Luca,” she says, her eyes scanning me up and down.
“What the fuck do you want? Because I swear I’m not in the mood for games.”
“I know,” she simply says, her face giving me nothing.
It’s as if I’m talking to a statue that’s barely showing human emotion. All I can see is the mild curiosity in her gaze. Am I a disappointment to her too? Is that what she’s thinking? Or does she not even care that she gave birth to me?
“I’m here to offer you a deal,” she says. “You don’t want Marcello’s territory, but I do, which makes us the perfect partners.”
I laugh. “Seriously? You’re working with Marcello. Why would I believe anything you say?”
“Let me finish. I want two things. Marcello’s territory when the time comes, and one hour of conversation with you. In exchange, I’ll give you some very valuable information.”
I furrow my brow. What the fuck is she talking about? As if Marcello is going to hand her over his territory. Why does she want an hour to talk to me? What the fuck?
“What kind of important information?” I have a billion questions, but only one matters right now.
“Marcello and Aurora’s location. I’ll have it in exactly three hours.” She opens her coat, and I tense, but she pulls out a sheet of paper. “It’s all here.”
I take it and lift my eyebrows at her. “You brought a contract for me to sign? Here?”
“Don’t look so surprised. I’m here to make a deal.”
“Why should I trust you? You’ll just send me into Marcello’s trap and take my territory. Is that what he promised you?”
