“Back to saving babies?” I asked.
“That’s the plan. I like the ER, but I’ll be glad to be back on the fifth floor.”
“When is your next day off?” I asked.
“Why?”
I shrugged. “Just wondering. I thought maybe we could continue our conversation from last night.”
She moved to the side of the bed and sat on the edge of the bed. “I’m off tomorrow, and then I’m on for six days.”
“That doesn’t seem like enough time off.” She had just worked a ton and was only going to get one day off before she was back to work six more days. That was shit.
She shrugged and rested her hand on the bed next to my leg. “It’s not that bad. After those six days, I’ll get three days off in a row.”
“Well, do you think I could take some of your time tomorrow?”
She sighed heavily.
“What’s wrong?” I questioned. That sigh did not seem good.
“It’s just, I mean,” she muttered.
“Birdie,” I called. “What is going on inside your head?” Last night, things hadn’t ended the way I would have wanted them to, but I didn’t think it ended badly.
“You don’t have to do this. I can handle it if I was just a distraction for you while you were in the hospital.”
“What? When did I ever make you feel like you were just a distraction for me?” I wished like hell that I could see Birdie. I would have been able to better figure out what the hell was going on with her.
“You didn’t,” she confessed. “I just don’t want you to feel like you have to do this.”
“Jesus, Birdie. You think I was bored and decided to just mess with you until I got out of here?”
“It doesn’t seem that crazy to me. You have to admit, Easy, I am not your type of girl.”
I furrowed my brow. “And just what exactly do you think my type is?” My type was her. Smart, beautiful, and kind.
“Uh, well, someone like your sister or Luna.”
I cringed and shook my head. “I am going to forget that you just told me my type is my sister.”
“No,” she laughed. “I just mean your type is like them. Strong, confident, and will kick ass when needed. I love to hang out with them, but you don’t have to be blind to know that I cannot hang with them. You have to have heard about the time I had an insensibility in front of Ransom.”
I chuckled softly and laid my hand on her leg. “Doc, the whole club has heard that story along with the reenactment from Greta and Luna.” It was fucking hilarious and proved to me that Birdie more than fit in with the club and me. “You’re smart as fuck, Birdie, but I’m going to need you to shut your brain off for a little bit. You’re thinking your way out of being with me before we even are.”
“Just,” she sighed, “I guess it’s hard for me to understand how I’m on your radar, let alone you wanting to spend time with me.”
“What time do you get off tonight?” I asked.
She tipped her head to the side. “Uh, seven.”
“Give me your phone number.” I nodded to the table. “Grab my phone and add it.”
“Easy,” she whispered.
“One thing you need to know about me, Doc. I do not do something because it is the right thing to do. I do things because I want to do them. Give me your phone number, and then text yourself, so you have my number.”
“You’re sure?” she mumbled.
