Although, in reality, she may have.

“Kelly, consulting a person of vision,” she had to choose her words carefully, “is not a sin. I firmly believe God grants people these gifts for a purpose. It is what they do with their gifts that makes them good or bad. This woman sounds delightful so I don’t think speaking with her could possibly cause any negative effects for you or the baby. But thinking that way can lead to emotional distress for you and that is not good for either of you.” Greylyn hoped she came off as comforting and the message got through to the distraught woman. Mental and emotional anguish, whether regarding something real or not, could cause all sorts of spiritual damage. Kelly needed to believe, to know, that she had not committed some horrific sin and God would not strike her down for it.

She patted Kelly’s hands reassuringly and smiled. “I’m so glad you found answers with this woman. Consider it a blessing she was able to assuage your fear.” Sitting back in her chair, she watched as the white energy wrapped around Kelly. Her shoulders relaxed noticeably. A tentative smile upturned her lips as she deeply sighed with relief.

Greylyn continued to prod with more questions so she could check on the psychic personally. “What was her name? I have always wanted to visit a psychic. With my track record with men and pretty much everything else, I could use some guidance myself.”

Kelly beamed as she relayed contact information for the psychic, Sofia. Luckily, she lived in nearby Washington, D.C. Just close enough for a late-night visit. “Perhaps you could ask her if she sees a future for you with Kael …”

Greylyn’s arms stopped in the middle of an exaggerated yawn and stretch. How had this turned back to Kael? She groaned. “What is it with you and Maureen pushing your friend on me? Do I look desperate or something?”

Both women yawned. Greylyn’s was more for show so she could leave to pursue the psychic angle, but with Kelly’s apprehension relieved, sheer exhaustion had set in. She and the baby needed sleep.

In a move unnatural to her, she reached over and hugged Kelly. One hand came up to stroke the woman’s silky strawberry-blonde hair as a mother would comfort a small child. A few strands clung to her fingers as they stepped apart.

Her retreat was halted as the boys came stumbling back in. Matthew looked happily drunk, but not slobbering drunk as she had witnessed in many a prospective groom after his bachelor party. His eyes were glazed over, but at least he was still coherent.

Kael was as bright-eyed as ever but was doing a good job of pretending to be intoxicated. He was a decent actor, showcasing just the slightest slur in his speech. However, his eyes gave him away. They conveyed wicked intelligence not the least bit dimmed by alcohol.

Of course, both gentlemen were surprised to find the bride not tucked away snug in her bed.

“I’m fine, silly. Just couldn’t sleep until my Prince Charming was safely back.”

Seriously, these two are just too cute together. I can’t take it.

She and Kael both rolled their eyes and groaned. With that, the couple headed up the stairs, giggling. Kelly called out, “Good night, you two.” She lowered her head to peer at them over the railing and winked.

Greylyn did not respond, just turned away, anxious to get on the road, but Kael put his hand out to stop her.

Impatience welled up inside her. Impatience to get to the psychic and determine if the woman had anything to do with the current predicament Kelly was in. Impatience to smack Kael across his smug face for bringing evil anywhere near the beautiful couple. And impatience for her vacation being interrupted.

Her jaw clenched with an effort not to aggravate the problem by sucker punching Kael. She needed every possible moment to get to Kelly’s psychic friend to determine the extent of the problem. The last thing she needed was to tangle again with this egomaniac devil. It was a waste of time…for now. Once she learned what, if any, of the psychic’s dealings had inflicted the danger Kelly was in now, she would be more prepared to thwart his plans.

She flung his hand off her forearm. “I may not know what your plan is, but you will not…repeat…will not harm a hair on Kelly’s head. I won’t allow it.”

Almond-shaped topaz eyes glistened in the dim light of the parlor. “I have no intention …” Without waiting for his entireI am innocentspeech, she roughly pulled him out the back door.

“Now, stay away Kael, or I will kill you.” She fished out the medallion and placed it back under the door mat and added a quick incantation in Latin to bolster its effect. The amplified protection spell would keep the dark guardian out of the house while she was away at least.

“Greylyn, don’t you think we should talk?” Kael called after her.

“Oh, we’ll talk soon enough.” She did not even turn around but sprinted to her car parked a few yards away and was squealing out of the lot before he had a chance to object.

Chapter 13

Discovery Road

Interstate 66

Gravel flew up into the air as the ’68 Camaro raced down the winding driveway. Greylyn dialed Thomas. Voicemail. Ugh! It was after midnight, but she needed him now more than ever. She hit the redial button, cursing the phone until he finally picked up.

“What is it now, Grey?” His voice was groggy. She shared the news about Kelly and the psychic’s blessings over the unborn baby. That seemed to break through his fog of sleep. In seconds, she heard the clicking of his fingers on his computer as he searched for something.

“Okay, now things are starting to make some sense,” he declared.

“Huh?”

Thomas started to explain his new theory, but first she needed him to look up the psychic’s address. Kelly had given her a general idea where the woman was located, but she needed an exact address…pronto. And considering she was driving and talking on the phone at the same time, it was best to not complicate matters by attempting an internet search too.
