With a deep breath to start, she shook off the vision and proceeded to let the whole story spill out. Sofia listened with keen interest. Her eyes widened in horror at the news that the child she hoped to protect was being stalked by evil. At the end of the story, she sat silently for a few moments, followed by a short coughing fit.

Twisting her wrinkled and weathered hands, the psychic’s eyes filled with tears. “Kelly is a beautiful, sweet young woman. She was heartbroken by the loss of her first child. I did not tell her this, it would have upset her too much, but the miscarriage was no accident at all. Evil had caused it, not some dysfunction of DNA or bad timing. What she needed was closure… reassurance that things would be different this time. Knowing what happened with the first child, I insisted on having the blessings said over them both.”

Greylyn’s heart ached for Kelly. “Were you able to discern why?” Surprisingly, Sofia started the story years before the first pregnancy.

“It was true that Kelly couldn’t get pregnant, at least according to the doctors who examined her when she was twenty years old. With what you say is happening now, it is my belief this was by some nefarious design for the news distressed her greatly. She did not handle it very well. To deal with her grief…well, let’s just say she lived a rather wild life for a while.”

Greylyn understood. The one thing she regretted the most about her own life was that, as a guardian angel, she would never become a mother. To have that hope ripped away must have been devastating.

Sofia continued, “All that changed when she met Matthew. He was her knight in shining armor. Saved her from going deeper down a very dark path. Miraculously, Kelly became pregnant almost immediately into the relationship. She was completely shocked!”

The woman paused for a sip of water. “I’m not sure what the catalyst was for the conception. I suspected supernatural interference but could not discover why or how. All I saw in her readings was a giant steel door guarded by a gray mist.” Shaking her head, Sofia sighed. “Not to toot my own horn, but it takes a lot to hide something from me.”

This story was taking longer than expected and Greylyn’s impatience began to emerge again. She tapped her toes against the worn foot of the sofa. She needed to know what she was supposed to protect Kelly and the baby from. What kind of attack should she expect? Some actionable intelligence. “What happened with the first pregnancy?”

“Everything appeared to be fine with Kelly and the baby. Not a lot of morning sickness, nothing unusual. Then she visited a friend in California before taking a side trip back to Georgia to tell her parents about the unplanned pregnancy. When Kelly returned, she quickly became ill with a remarkably high fever. Dangerously high. At her next routine ultrasound, the baby’s heart was no longer beating.”

Sofia’s eyes closed and her hands visibly trembled. “Kelly was devastated! All her hopes and dreams blew up that day.”

Greylyn prompted, “But you said evil forces caused the baby’s death?”

Nodding, Sofia’s eyes narrowed. “Something didn’t seem right to me about the miscarriage. Call it nagging intuition. I tried everything to find out more, but the only thing that was clear was that darkness surrounded the first child almost from the very beginning. I’m not sure how they got to the baby, but the truth remains that evil was responsible for the miscarriage.”

Her voice was so stern that Greylyn would not have dared to contradict the woman’s assertion. Besides, her own intuition agreed one hundred percent.

“Did something happen to her while she was in California or Georgia? You don’t think her parents …”

“No. No. Nothing like that. Her parents weren’t thrilled, but they would never have brought down such devastation on their own daughter.” Sofia’s eyes crinkled. “Good instincts, though. Kelly asked the same thing. Her strict religious upbringing had her doubting her own parents’ love for her. Of course, it also made her feel enormous guilt when she was blameless. A child conceived in love is never a mistake.”

Still, Greylyn intended to do a thorough auric sweep of Kelly’s parents before allowing them near their daughter again. Just in case.

The question remained. Why would evil forces want to harm Kelly’s first child and what exactly were their intentions for the second?

Greylyn had never witnessed an instance where one woman’s children were targeted like this. She had never heard of it happening either. Could it be because Kelly’s child was destined to be a guardian? If so, why kill the first one? They would have had years to get to the child before it was determined if he or she would be a guardian for good or evil. But why go after both?

Unless the point was to drive the grieving woman to desperation and make her spiritually weak so evil could influence Kelly.

That theory was starting to hold more substance now. If evil could make the potential guardian turn dark, the plan certainly seemed to be working. But Greylyn was not about to let it come to fruition.

Again, the question bugged her – was Kelly the target or her child?

The old woman took Greylyn’s hands in her own and looked her squarely in the eyes. The intensity that shone from them startled her, like a cosmic ray beaming straight into her soul. “Until tonight, I didn’t know guardian angels actually existed even though I’ve been blessed with insight into the spirit world since I was a young child. Guess you are never too old to learn something new.” She chuckled softly which brought on another coughing fit. “When Kelly first came to me there was a soft white glow around her, almost like an aura, but it seemed different somehow. I knew she was special but not why. There was also a tinge of gray, almost invisible but I saw it right away.”

This agreed with what Greylyn herself witnessed upon meeting Kelly. But the gray tinge had grown immensely and dimmed the white light.

The woman’s words came more quickly now as her thoughts outpaced her own tongue. “Kelly came to me after she found out she was pregnant again. She was so frightened at the possibility of losing another child. Unfortunately, the spirits are so in awe of this child that they will not speak about him. Not a peep!” Sofia sighed sadly before continuing, “I had multiple blessings said for the child and mother, as well as several protection spells performed. Thought it would be enough. I guess not if you are here now on their behalf.”

The psychic’s face crinkled in concern. Greylyn wished she could provide her some comfort. But she did not like to lie. Things were not looking good right now.

She decided to press her for assistance now that they were on the same page about protecting the young woman and her child. “Help me make things right…for Kelly and the baby. I need to see the blessings and any other spells you utilized.” Sofia stood up gingerly. Hunched over a wooden cane with a labradorite crystal ball on the tip, she shuffled over to a corner table for a piece of paper and a pen. Trying not to let her impatience get the best of her, Greylyn nervously tapped her toes against the worn wooden leg.

Sofia handed her a stack of worn and partially torn lined paper. Upon a quick review of the list, she found one glaring error. The Babylonian protection spell specific to the unborn was lacking a key ingredient that made the spell inclusive of the mother carrying the child. Without that part, the mother could still be harmed, which would undo the protection of the baby.

Thankfully, the other spells had acted as a deterrent to any harm Kael or others wanted to deal out, but they were not completely foolproof. Regardless, evil was still lurking around them, waiting. It needed to be eliminated permanently.

Informing her of the error, tears brimmed in Sofia’s eyes and threatened to spill down her wrinkled cheek. Greylyn reached over to pat her trembling hands to reassure her.

“It’s going to be okay. There’s a real easy fix – well, sort of an easy fix – and we can ensure Kelly and the child are protected fully. But we must do this now. I cannot stress enough how critical time is for them.” Greylyn resisted the urge to explain that Kelly was within fifty yards of a dark guardian at this exact moment. Causing the psychic to panic could only lead to mistakes.
