I was at the counter one afternoon when a lady walked into the Lodge. She was alone. I had half expected a man to walk in behind her, as it was rare to find young women lodging alone.

"Hello, welcome to King's Oak Lodge," I said with a smile.

She nodded coldly. "I'm here to see Trev Adams. Is he in?" she said curtly.

I was shocked. Trev had been at the Lodge for over a month, and that was the first time someone had come to see him. She didn't look like any lady I had seen in town, which meant she was an outsider.

"He is not in at the moment, you can wait for him over there," I said, pointing at the seating in the great room.

He's not in his room. Is he? No, I didn’t see him come back in. … Well, I need to protect the privacy of his space and his possessions in any case. Innkeeper’s Rule!

"Ugh, I can't stay out here,” she said, making a face. “Isn't it possible to wait for him in his room?" she asked, suddenly all sweetness and sugar.

"I'm afraid I can't allow that," I declined.

"Pretty please, I really need to lay down. I've had a long trip to get here," she pleaded.

I had mixed feelings; she seemed like a snake, but the thought of her being a family member crossed my mind.

In case of doubt (and I had many): Stick to the Innkeeper’s Rule.

"Please just make yourself comfortable here in the great room. I’m sure if you phone him he’ll let you know what to do,” I said.

Nice save, woman!Stand your ground. Good job.

Since the woman did as I invited her to do and I saw her pick up a magazine, I went about my business, not only in the reception area but back in the kitchen.

Chapter 19

Trev

ThingswithLindseywereeven better after our weekend in the Caribbean. She slept in my room whenever she felt like it; she always made sure I wasn't in my “work zone” before coming in. She wasn't bothered about any of the other guests seeing her come out of my room the next morning. I enjoyed having her around, the sex was hot.

Sheis hot!

But it was her companionship that was the biggest bonus of all. Sometimes I would ask for her input about a few things concerning the game, but mostly we talked about everything but the game.

That afternoon, I had gone out to get more pads to sketch on. She had invited me to take her car, but I had refused, insisting that I needed the walk. As always when I was on a creative roll, my daily ninety-minute workouts never happened. I was starting to feel fat.

"Hey," she said as soon as I got into the Lodge.

"I wish I had taken you up on your offer and gone with the car," I lamented.

"I knew you would regret it." She laughed at me. "Your guest has arrived. She was …" She said to me, sort of looking around the reception area and into the great room as if to spot someone.

I was confused as to what she was talking about, as I had not been expecting anyone. "What guest?" I asked.

"She came in asking for you. No name. I assumed she was … family?"

"You let her into my room? With all my work just laying around? Can’t you protect guests’ valuables better than that?! Are youstupid?" I spat the words at Lindsey before I could stop them.

"Excuse me?!"

It was already out there and I felt there was no need to take it back. "I'm sorry, but how can you just let a random stranger into my room because youassumedthey were my family member?" I said with a harsh tone.

I saw Lindsey look at me in shock, and her mouth opened and closed with no words coming out. "What? I never … Hey! You called me …stupid?!"

I wasn't listening to her anymore; I was more concerned with the lady whom she had thought was family. Not a lot of people knew where I was, so who was this lady?
