Maya patted her boot before coming to a stand. Her eyes darted from him to Sophia and back. “You fancy the fey.”

“What makes you think that?”

“My killer instincts.” Her violet eyes sparkled even as she rolled her eyes. “Or maybe because you’ve been watching her like a hawk all day.”

Was it that obvious that he had been looking at her all day?Losing my mind!

If Sophia wasn’t his mate, he wouldn’t be so drawn to her. In other words, he couldn’t help it. At least, he was trying to convince himself that he couldn’t help it. In all honesty, he was beginning to believe his attraction to Sophia had to do with a lot more than her simply being his mate.

“I need to make sure she doesn’t run off before we’re called to the battlefield.” That made sense. Surely that was why his eyes were drifting in her direction even now.

“Uh huh.” Maya clicked her tongue. “Doesn’t look like the feeling is mutual.”

“She’s just being smart. It’s better that we’re not friends. There’s no happy endings to friendships among competitors in this tournament.” Maya didn’t need to know he was trying to get Sophiaoutof this tournament.

“Friends?” Maya’s entertained grin didn’t falter. “Just don’t bring yourfriendshipquarrels onto the battlefield. I plan on surviving tonight.”

“We’ll do just fine,” he assured her.

She snorted. “Whatever you say, wolf.”

The rules for tonight’s games were clear - capture their competition’s flag and bring it back to their own base. The first team to do so won. After the match, any immortals on the losing team that were still standing would be executed.

Feeling slightly anxious about tonight’s game himself, he began to worry for Sophia again, looking back over to her.

Panic struck him when he didn’t immediately see her. He pushed himself off the wall he frantically searched the crowdedhall until he located her not far from where she was sitting a moment ago.Still safe.

His eyes narrowed when he noticed she was talking with Casper. What the hell washedoing down here?

Control yourself. She isn’t yours to have. Why was he having such a difficult time remembering that? More importantly, why was he beginning to think she actuallywas?

Because sheismine.

As their conversation continued, he began to notice Sophia’s body language. She didn’t seem to want anything to do with Casper. She was constantly looking away, arms crossed over her chest, foot repeatedly tapping against the floor. In fact, she was storming away from Casper in no time.

Antonio had to work on containing his smile as she approached with a scowl on her face. For some reason, Sophia wasn’t looking at Casper with the same mesmerized glow that usually lit her face whenever they talked. She was looking at him with disgust. The same disgust Antonio saw on her face yesterday, moments before he succumbed to his beast.

Maybe that look of revulsion wasn’t intended for him but for Casper instead.

“What did Casper want?” Antonio asked as Sophia approached them.

She wrinkled her nose. “He decided now was a good time to teach me how to fight. You know, because I didn’t think I needed to know the basics of fighting when I signed up for this tournament.” She looked away, lowly commenting, “That man knows nothing about me.”

“Let’s not get too distracted with petty drama while we’re out there. I don’t think I have to keep explaining that I intend tolivetonight.”

“Excuse me?” Sophia was taken aback by Maya’s words.

Antonio sighed. The two of them had been at it all day and he was sure they weren’t going to stop anytime soon. “Maya, we all want to live.”

“Some more than others, it seems,” Maya muttered. When Sophia and Antonio gave her questioning looks, she added, “Oh come on. You two are clearly squabbling. This is the first time she looked at you all day! We need to walk on that battlefield as a unified front, not a broken team.”

“We’re not arguing,” Sophia was quick to say.

“Sure, whatever.” Maya flippantly waved her hand, as if brushing what she said away.

Antonio could feel the tension in the air, most of it emanating off Sophia, who looked like she was about to blow her lid off. They needed to move on from this tension, stat. “Maya - what are your powers? Telling us will only help,” Antonio asked. Every sorceress had three unique powers, Maya would as well.

Maya laughed. “You think I’m going to give away my secrets? You’ll know what my powers are when and if you need to. Until then, my lips are sealed.”
