With tears in her eyes, she hugged the tote bag to her chest as she approached Mama Hen. “I love you,” she mumbled as she wrapped Mama Hen up tight with her free arm.
“Get your hormones under control, girl. Can’t have you blubbering during a stakeout.” As she spoke, Mama Hen gently patted Pixie on the back. “Now, wipe your tears and eat your burrito.”
Pixie nodded and sniffled as she wiped away her tears. Mama Hen was sent by the gods.
Ready to go, Ranger loaded them back up in the van and they were on the move.
Mama Hen
As they sat in the van down the street from the library, but in full view of the parking lot, Mama Hen was about to pull her hair out. She loved her chickens, but the bitches didn’t stop clucking for long.
Darlin’ was complaining about the floor of the van being too hard, when in all reality it had more to do with the fact that her ass could use some fluff. Kisy was having a hard time sitting still. She kept flicking the carabiner against the side of her flashlight. Gorgeous kept yawning because Axle had a tendency of waking Nugget up every time he wanted to snuggle his baby girl, and Gorgeous ended up having to put the little girl back to sleep. Moral of the story: She was tired. Sugar questioned whether or not they should be invading Rebel’s privacy. Butterfly explained that it wasn’t invading his privacy because they would be watching him in public. Peanut thought everything was hilarious. And Pixie kept crunching on her dill pickles.
Good thing they didn’t need to stakeout for long.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, she noticed the door to the library swing open. Peering through the night vision goggles, she saw Rebel step out with a beautiful woman.
“Show time, Ladies,” Ranger said.
Rebel
Rebel followed Ruby around the library as she closed things up and turned off lights. He picked up any stray books he found along the way and put them on the cart she had next to her desk. After she locked the front door, he took her hand and walked with her across the parking lot to her newish metallic mint Camaro.
Bri pushed the button to unlock the car, but when she went to open the door, Rebel stopped her. She turned to face him with a question in her eyes. He couldn’t wait any longer. The forty minutes he had spent in the library with Bri was enough to have him on edge. He needed to kiss her like he needed air to breathe. Rebel reached up and cupped her head in his palms, sliding his fingers in the hair on the sides of her head, and pressed his lips to hers.
The sweet taste of her lips sent shocks of pleasure through his body as his wolf howled his approval. She gasped, and Rebel took advantage, sliding his tongue inside her mouth and caressing hers. He knew the moment she decided to go with it, because she dropped her bag and slid her arms around his waist, pulling him closer.
Rebel broke the kiss with a growl and was about to move down to kiss along her neck, but a raucous noise came from the street. He turned his head and groaned when he saw the van owned by the Howlers parked under a large tree that was blocking the glow of the streetlight. With his shifter vision, he was able to easily see Mama Hen in the driver’s seat and Ranger in the passenger’s seat. Standing outside the van were all the Ol’ Ladies, dressed in all black, with camo paint on their faces.
“Squeee!” Kisy was up on her toes, her TC cut shifting with her movements.
Sugar was giggling with Peanut and clapping.
Darlin’ and Gorgeous were hooting and hollering.
Pixie was whooping and fist-bumping the sky.
Then, Ranger rolled down the window and stuck his head out. “I can’t believe you went and fell in love and didn’t tell me! I’m supposed to be your closest friend!”
Rebel rolled his eyes and let out a sigh. That’s when he heard the giggles coming from Ruby. He glanced down to see her eyes shining up at him with laughter.
“You think that’s funny? They are all my brothers’ women.”
She nodded. “They love you. They want you to be happy and are happy for you. That’s never a bad thing.”
He was just about to suggest he follow her home when he felt his phone vibrating in his pocket. With a quick glance at his group ofloved ones, he saw they were all looking at their phones.Shit.
Rebel pulled his phone out of his pocket and read the text from Axle.
>Emergency church. Rock and Mary request. Not bad.<
Rebel knew what that meant. Rock wasfinallymaking Mary his Ol’ Lady. As much as he wanted to spend more time with Ruby, he needed to be there to support his friend and his new sister.
Shoving his phone back in the pocket of his cut, he pressed his lips to Ruby’s, retrieved her bag from the ground, handed it to her, and opened her car door. “Can you do dinner with me and the twins tomorrow?”
She nodded. “I work the early shift and will be out by three.”
Once she was situated in her seat, he bent down and kissed her again. “I’ll text you my address. Be there around six?”
