Her brows furrowed. “Of course, you would. No one was making you do anything.”
“Technically, a large sum of money was on the line.”
She showed me a death stare. “And that’s reason enough to make fun of people? Mess with their hearts?”
I straightened and kept my eyes on hers. “I don’t recall making fun of anyone, and I’m certain I didn’t mess with anyone’s heart.”
“You don’t know that.” She pressed her lips into a thin line.
“If I hurt your heart, I’m sorry.”
Her expression softened slightly. “Not mine.”
“You were the only one I met that night, and same for you.”
“You are far too observant for your own good.”
“I also like to think I’m a good listener.”
Lucy’s expression softened even more. “What does your company do?”
“Apparently, you’re a good listener too.” I smiled, remembering our call. “It’s a gaming company.”
Maybe she’d forget about the details of the matchmaking event and accept my apology.
“What kind of games? Board games?”
I shook my head. “Video games.”
“Do you design them?”
“I have a team for that,” I offered simply. I wasn’t sure she really wanted the specifics.
“Then what do you do? Why do you own a gaming company? What’s your added value?” Her brows shot up.
I was wrong. The woman liked details.
“Well, back in college, I came up with a killer concept for a game. I had the storyline sketched out in my head, and I knew it would be extremely popular. But I wound up working in sales for a software company. I knew if I tried to develop it, the game would flop. I understood enough to know I needed a good team to help me develop my vision.” I leaned forward. “I waited to quit until I could fully execute my dream. The game has done extremely well.”
She studied me for a quick second. “So, are you a one-hit wonder?”
I laughed and shook my head. “Our last three games have been voted best console game of the year upon release.”
“You don’t strike me as a gamer.” She glanced at the barista. “Do you like video games?”
Ah, she thinks someone like the flirty barista is a gamer, but not the guy sitting in front of her.
I smiled. “Do you do this on all your dates?”
“Do what?”
“Interrogate them like they’re on a witness stand.”
