She narrowed her eyes on me. “How long have you owned it?”
I laughed, shaking my head. “You are such a lawyer.”
She groaned and slid down in her seat a little. “Sorry. I can’t help myself.”
“And I think it’s adorable.”
“Adorable? That’s not one I’ve heard before. Annoying... know-it-all... boring.” She grinned at me. “But not adorable.”
“The one thing you aren’t is boring. You keep me on my toes at all times.”
She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, and I wished we were closer to my place so I could kiss her right behind her ear and smell her intoxicatingly sweet scent of soap and perfume and whatever else that was uniquely Lucy.
She was heaven.
“Well, I don’t know if that’s a good thing, but I’ll take it.”
Lucy rested her head on the seat, and I noticed that within a few minutes, she fell asleep, and I knew she needed this escape more than most. I only hoped she wasn’t disappointed.
Chapter Thirty
Cozy Cabin of Dreams
Lucy
I didn’t know how long I’d slept, but when I woke up, it was nearly dark, and Shep had just turned onto an exit.
Piled snow lined the edges of the road, and I sat up straighter.
“Is this really the car we should have taken up here?”
He laughed. “Probably not, but it was worth the smile I got earlier.”
Even though the snow was deep, the road was bare, and within minutes, he made a left down a country road with nothing but trees bowing from the weight of the latest snowfall.
“This is absolutely perfect,” I said, looking out the window.
He slid his hand to my knee, and I felt a thrill from the unknown. Heat pooled deep within my belly, and I couldn’t believe I was actually in such a beautiful place with such a great guy.
I snuck a look at Shep, and I couldn’t help but feel a little squeeze of hope in my chest.
What if I’d accidentally found the one? That guy who thought my quirks were adorable and my annoyances were worth embracing?
I cleared my throat and looked out the window as I tried to push down the excitement for the weekend ahead. This was how people got caught up in relationships that never should have happened.
Hormones.
I needed to take one step at a time and not jump over the entire getting-to-know-a-person thing.
What I hadn’t told Shep yet was that I’d gone into the office super early this morning so that I could get most everything done before our getaway.
Judging by the happiness on his face, he’d be thrilled to find that out.
“Here we are.” Shep pulled down a long driveway with Douglas firs towering over the small, freshly plowed road with snow piled taller than our car. “I have to confess that I’m relieved that my snowplow guy is reliable. Otherwise, I really would have regretted my vehicle selection.”
I chuckled and nodded as my cell buzzed in my pocket. “This car sets the tone for the weekend, but it wouldn’t have been completely awesome having to hike in from the road.”
Shep nodded. “So, I owe the entire success of the holiday weekend to the plow guy, or this car’s insufficiencies would have been on full display.”
