Page 6 of April is for Asher

While I don't know what to expect at this doctor’s appointment, I have been doing some research. Probably very soon we will be able to find out if it's a boy or girl and today we might even get to hear the baby's heartbeat. That alone both excites and terrifies me.

When Jenna arrives, parking next to me, I breathe a sigh of relief. Having my eyes on her and knowing her and the baby are okay calms me.

Well, that is, until she gets out of the car and I see the stress all over her face.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"It's been a week already, and it's only Tuesday. If you still want to go, we can talk at lunch," she says.

I've been looking forward to our lunch all week, but even more so now. There is no way I'd let her out of it now.

"Of course I want to go. I found a few places and you can pick when we are done." Placing my hand on her lower back, I lead her into the doctor's office.

Being so close, I can smell the perfume she is wearing. It’s the same one she wore the night we were together and my dick suddenly thinks it's time to come out and play.

Great, the last thing I need is to walk in to the doctor’s office with a hard on. Especially since that is what got us in here to begin with.

We don't wait near as long as I expect before we are called to the back. They check her weight and have her pee in a cup. My job is being put in charge of holding her jacket and purse in the hallway. Then we get shown to the exam room where Jenna sits on the exam table and I sit in the chair next to her. When the nurse takes her vitals, she frowns and retakes them.

"What's wrong?" I ask, as they share a look of understanding.

"They are a bit high..." the nurse says.

"It's just the stress from this morning," Jenna dismisses it. But the nurse gives her a tense smile.

"Well, the doctor will be right in to talk to you," she says, scurrying out of the room.

With the back of the exam table up, Jenna lies back in a reclined position and looks over at me. The lack of sleep is evident around her eyes, and she looks pale but still as beautiful as that first night I saw her.

Reaching out, I brush some hair from her face and run my thumb over her cheek. For a moment, we lock eyes and enjoy each other's touch before there is a knock, and the doctor walks in.

"Alright mom is this Dad?" she asks.

"Yes." Jenna smiles at me and just hearing them refer to me as dad does something funny with my heart.

"Your vitals are a bit high, so I'd like to recheck them again before you leave," the doctor says.

Nodding, Jenna says, "I've been stressed about this move."

"I get it. Moves are stressful under the best of situations, and we know this isn't the best of circumstances. Make sure you are resting and taking down time since you are still working. Now let's get your measurements, and then we will listen to the baby."

The doctor pulls out a small tape measure and starts feeling Jenna's belly before measuring it.

"Right on track. Now this gel is going to be cold," the doctor says, squeezing some on to Jenna's belly. Then she pulls out what looks like a microphone and starts running it over the gel.

It takes a moment of some weird sounds before the loud sound of a train fills the room. Jenna relaxes and reaches for my hand.

"That's your baby," the doctor says.

All I can do is stare at the tiny swell of Jenna's stomach in awe. There is a baby in there. Our baby.

After that, I don't hear much of what else the doctor says. In a daze, I follow Jenna out front as she makes her next appointment. Thankfully, they hand me an appointment card because I couldn't remember the day and time to save my life.

Once the cold air hits me in the parking lot, I snap back into action. The mother of my child needs to eat, which means my child needs to eat.

"There is a deli with soups and sandwiches nearby. Also, there’s a little Italian café, and a Mexican place all within walking distance." I point each out in the plaza which is nearby.

"You really did do your research, huh? Italian sounds great," she says, smiling at me.
