“Of course not! I would never.”
I know he’s right. Whit is the most stand-up guy that I’ve ever met. He would never take advantage of me or anyone else.
He would never have to. Have you seen him?
I ignore my subconscious and grab the coffee and two aspirin on the table.
“Sorry,” I murmur, and he nods.
“You threw up on your clothes.”
“Oh god,” I groan.
“And the bathroom floor…”
“Please stop.”
“And outside in the bushes.”
“And you still let me into your house?” I ask, and he grins.
“Couldn’t leave you out there to freeze. Besides, you were pretty adorable.”
“When I was throwing up?”
“Yeah.”
“No one looks good throwing up,” I tell him, and he just grins.
“You always look good.”
He’s so dang sweet. I swear, every time he opens his mouth, I fall for him a little more.
“What time is it?” I ask, trying to change the subject.
“A little after eleven.”
“Crap! I have to be at Snips at noon!”
“I’ll drive you,” he says, and I lunge from the bed.
He catches me before I can fall on my face and carries me into the bathroom. I wince when the light from the window hits my eyes.
“Sorry, here,” he says, grabbing my clean, folded clothes and carrying me and the clothes into the closet. “You can get dressed in here. Away from that mean old sun.”
He leaves, and I hurry to get changed. I don’t know why, but I find myself shoving Whit’s borrowed shirt into my purse before I go in search of my shoes.
It doesn’t mean anything,I try to convince myself.
I grab my coffee and chug the rest of it. It scalds the roof of my mouth but it’s a small price to pay for caffeine. Whit is waiting for me by the front door, and I take my shoes from him, shoving them on my feet before I follow him outside.
“Did you want me to stop and grab you something to eat?” He asks as we head down the back road toward town.
I dry heave.
“Shit, sorry,” he apologizes, but I wave him off.
He cracks the window open, giving me some fresh air and I want to throw myself at him. I’m so sick of resisting him, of trying to ignore my feelings for him. I want Whit and I’m tired of pushing him away.
