“Is everything okay?” I answer, and she chuckles.
“Do you always answer the phone like that?”
“Only when it’s you.”
“How did you know it was me?”
“I’ve had your phone number for a while,” I admit.
“Figures.”
“Want to meet me at the bar in twenty?” She asks, and I wonder what is happening.
“Sure. I’ll see you there.”
She hangs up, and I wonder what her calling means. Is she planning on getting drunk again? Did something happen?
I was headed over to Hunter’s place, but I change course and make the short drive into town. I get to the bar first, head inside and back to the same booth we were in yesterday. I don’t have to wait long before Anise walks in. She smiles as she heads my way, and my heart flips over in my chest.
She slides in across from me as the waitress from yesterday comes back over.
“Another Long Island iced tea?” She asks, and Anise shudders.
“No, just a Coke, please,” she says, and I nod.
“Same.”
She seems a little nervous, and it has me on edge.
“Is everything okay?” I ask, and she nods.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure? Are you feeling alright?” I press.
“I’m fine. The aspirin this morning helped. I promise.”
I nod, sitting back as our drinks are dropped off.
“Whit…” she starts, and I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what she’ll say next. “Do you want to have sex with me?”
“Hell yes,” I blurt out.
Anise lets out a surprised laugh at my eagerness, and I shift in my seat.
“Well, let’s go then.”
Now it’s my turn to be surprised. She starts to slide out of her seat, and my mouth drops open as I stare after her. I drop a twenty on the table and run to catch up with her.
“There’s going to be some ground rules though,” she says as I lead her over to my truck and help her inside.
“What kind of ground rules?” I ask once I’m in the truck.
I start to head to my place, and she chews on her bottom lip, thinking it over.
“This is just for one night. I can’t do more than that,” she says.
I frown. I don’t want to agree to that rule, but I want Anise. Maybe I could find a way to break the rules.
