“What?” She whimpered.
“Go to the airport, Lennox.”
“For what? I don’t have any clothes.”
“I need you to listen to me. Get to the airport. I’ll fly you up here and get you back home. Just get to the airport.”
“I—” Lennox couldn’t speak. Finally, she mentioned, “Scott.”
“Where is he?”
“I left him. He’s with his cousins, fishing.”
“Then he’ll be fine. Scott’s with his family. And if Kelly-Ann needs help, she can get help from Terry’s mother. She ain’t helpless, Lennox. She can step up in your absence.” When she didn’t speak right away, I repeated. “Get to the airport. I need to make a few calls. I’ll hit you back and tell you where to park.”
I finally took a breath when she sniveled, “Okay.”
We were cleared to remove our seatbelts. As I obeyed, my attention shot across the aircraft to Danny G, who was unclipping his as well. He must have felt my curious glare and glanced up. Then he chuckled.
“Girl, we good. See. We landed safely.”
I was still stuck on how Tobias arranged for me to fly to New Jersey on Ragee’s private jet. Private. I had to park in a smaller lot at the airport, too. It took longer to make it to the airport, park, then board than it did to arrive in Jersey.
The rich are rich for a reason.
“Yo,” Danny G tossed his chin toward his window. “Go ‘head.”
I stood and grabbed my things to see what he was referring to. But then the flight attendant appeared, directing me to the front of the plane. Without hesitation, I began toward the door that was being opened. As I took down the stairs, I tried stealing glances at massive acreage. Lush, green, botanical scenery for days. This was clearly private property. A full estate.
Finally, I looked ahead. The captain and co-captain were at the foot of the steps, greeting me just as professionally as they did when we met in Raleigh. One gestured ahead with his hand. Following his sight, my lungs seized. He was standing next to a golf cart off the runway. Even under aKingsbaseball cap, I could make out that full beard and robust frame from a distance. My heart burst open as I continued down the stairs, my short legs taking long strides toward him.
Tobias’ expression was placid, but his aura expectant. A goofy smile warmed my face as I traveled, mere feet from him. I reached for his thick body before I could touch him. He didn’t waste a second to greet me. His scent and heat in low, and damp November temps warmed my soul. I inhaled his strong, protective countenance for seconds long. I had just been a crying mess two hours ago, and now, I felt a deluge of emotions I couldn’t control.
I peered up to his hooded eyelids. “I didn’t call because I don’t want to be one of those women, running from one bad relationship to a savior. I mean…” I swallowed. “I know you’re more than that—we’re more than just a passionate fling—but I have to feel the ground myself. When I’m with you, I’m floating on air. I’m feeling too much. Then Kelvin got arrested, and I fell into the blues. I’ve been trying to arrange my exit. My therapist warned me about closing out my affairs with my marriage before being swept up in a tide of emotions with another being or thing. She’s right. I shut you out and I’m sorry.”
Tobias, still impassive, dug his big fingers into my curls, reaching for my scalp. He gripped my skull firm enough to tilt my face toward his, then dipped down and kissed me. His mouth was hungry. His ravishing pace expressed forgiveness and, oddly, patience. My body thundered, collapsing against his. I wasn’t accustomed to this level of intimacy with any man, not even my husband. It was wild for me to be kissing another man out in the open considering my sensitive situation. But I couldn’t care less. My heart felt at home against his hard body. I tasted him greedily until he pulled away. His smile had finally arrived, eyes now tight with lust.
“I’mma have to pull up on your therapist. Let her know I’m the real deal. I was made to love you,” his delivery thick and assured. “It’s a slightly obsessive love, and I see how that can be problematic for you and me. But I’m working to prove I can be the man for you. I’ll take you as you are. A year from now, when Richardson’s name ain’t tied to yours, you won’t be better wrapped with a bigger, prettier ribbon. You’re perfect as you are. Always have been to me.” Tobias pressed his lips firmly into mine in a kiss. “It’s late. Let’s get you something to eat.” He pulled me toward the passenger side of the cart.
“Yuuuurp!” It was Danny G greeting him, now deboarding the plane himself.
Tobias tapped his chest with his hand while moving back to the driver’s side. He sparked the engine and switched gears to leave.
“Aren’t you going to wait for Danny G?”
“Nah.” Tobias pulled off. “Leech got ‘im.” He pointed behind us to another golf cart.
“This is a massive ass property. Where are we?”
“Ragee’s backyard.”
Oh… I glanced around, even more impressed. “That was his plane?” Tobias nodded his head. My heart fluttered again for him.
“You good?” Tobias asked me, again, for the fiftieth time since he walked me into an opulent mansion in the middle of Sussex County, New Jersey. Huge.
Huge!
The home had a black and white contemporary theme. The ceilings were tall, some vaulted, and the halls endless. I’d only been inside three rooms, but had ambled past several. This home was a dream. Long and wide windows with garnished treatments. The dining room table we were eating at with eighteen other guests had been the longest I’d ever seen.
