When you’re in your teens, four years was nearly most of our life. We were so different compared to our friends who tended to date one day and forget about their so-called love of their lives name the following day.
“Fuck!” He blurted, as he moved away from me, buckling up his pants as his once erect length turned limp.
I didn’t even bother to put on my clothes, because I thought maybe he would notice something different about me.
“I’ve got to leave.”
I nodded in agreement because my parents would be back in about fifteen minutes, I calculated as I looked at the digital clock on the wall.
“I meant I need to leave Oregon. I’ve managed to locate my dad, in Illinois.”
My heart skipped a beat. Ever since his stepdad beat him so bad that he ended up in hospital, and his mom pleaded with him to tell the concerned nurses that he had fallen down the stairs, since he’d learned the truth from his Nan that the man he called ‘Dad’ wasn’t really his father, he had wanted to find his real dad. I knew that. He’d said everything about the way he’d been treated in the past by his stepdad now made sense. His Mom refused to give him any details, saying it would upset his stepdad.
I smiled. “This is fantastic news. When? How?”
I was smiling on the outside, but deep down inside I was disappointed with the news. The last few weeks when he’d been hot and cold, this meant he was really looking for his dad, and instead of sharing with me, he’d decided to keep it to himself until now.
Drake sighed as he moved away from me. I picked up the dress I once had on and put that on.
“It wasn’t easy. Matteo Rodriguez is like a common name, and Nan didn’t have much to go on. He was invited to a birthday party and Mom got wasted and spent one night with him. She cheated on Ken, maybe that was why Ken treated me like crap from the time he realized there was a chance I wasn’t his son.”
I shook my head, because none of this really made sense. “What do you mean, from the time he realized you wasn’t his son? I thought he knew about the one-night stand. So, when did he find out?”
I grabbed some fresh panties and put them on. The small time we had together wouldn’t be spent getting busy like we’d once planned. We needed to talk, and part of me wondered why Drake had kept all this from me.
“Mel, don’t be mad. I know I said I’d been busy studying and getting ready for college. You have a perfect life. One that I wish I had, but let’s face it. Mine has been so damn hard for too long. Think about it, I have blue eyes and dark hair. Neither Ken nor Mom have. Sure, they used to joke about Nan having the same eyes as me. But I’m like the black sheep…if there’s such a saying in the family. None of my features makes any sense and I’m no fool. You know when you’re different. Or at least I did…”
“Shit! My parents are here. I can hear their car in the driveway.”
I grabbed my bra, and without another word, we both knew our place. It would be in the living room watching a movie, and then within a few minutes he would be gone. My parents were still old fashion that way, though it was crazy seeing as I was going to college soon. Unlike Drake, I didn’t get the grades. It sucked, because we would be apart and there was so much for us to say, but I had a feeling from the way he was talking, time wasn’t really on our side.
“Mom, Dad,” I said out of breath. The movie we were supposedly watching started playing the credits. We’d paused it as our back-up plan, just in case they walked in.
“Drake, son.”
Son?
My father’s dark eyes lit up as they landed on Drake and I wondered why he had a change of heart. Dad had been a little bitter, he said that I spent all my time with Drake which is why I never scored a high GPA.
Drake had a high GPA, a football scholarship, and was heading to Harvard. Whereas his little girl wasn’t going to an Ivy League college.
Drake said I had the perfect home life, but it was far from it.
Drake gave me a surprised look, which made me look to the side and see my Mom. She looked sad, as if she’d been crying, her blood shot eyes avoiding mine.
“Hello, Mr. Wilson,” said Drake. “I was just heading out, I start my shift in an hour.”
“Oh you’re still working at Taco Bell. I thought, seeing as you’re starting college soon, you would give that up.”
He had done, it was a lie. He’d quit working last weekend, because his Nan had given him a handful of money and told him to travel and see the world this summer.
Why the hell was he making up lies about needing to go to work?
“Yeah, I won’t be working over the summer, but traveling. I’ll fill you in, the next time I’m here.”
My Dad nodded his head, but then there was something strange about the way the pair of them were behaving and as Drake lingered on my lips to say goodbye, I felt as if I was in a room of secrets.
As soon as he walked and shut the door, Mom spat it out. “Your dad’s leaving us. He has a girlfriend and is going.”
