He puts his arm around me and tucks me close to his body. “We’ll give them a show they’ll never forget.”
We march to the door and stand there, both of us staring at it. Colt glances at me, raising his brow in question, asking me one final time if I’m totally okay with this. I nod. With his own nod, he closes his hand over the knob and pulls the door open.
As soon as we walk out of the room, whoever is in the hallway gawks at us. Some blink a few times, as though they swear their eyes are playing tricks on them. Some jaws fall open, several eyes nearly pop off faces, lots of whispers fill the area. I’ve been invisible my whole life and never cared what other people thought of me. But having the spotlight on me? It’s a very odd and uncomfortable feeling, that’s for sure.
“So this is what it feels like to be you,” I whisper to Colt.
“What?”
“Everyone staring.” I nod at the various kids we pass on the way to the cafeteria. “Doesn’t it make you so uncomfortable?”
“You get used to it,” he says.
I narrow my eyes. “You’re lying.”
He gapes at me before laughing softly. “There’s no getting anything past you, is there?”
“I don’t do BS.”
“That’s good to know. Although, you’re kind of BSing right now. Hypocrite,” he jokes.
I sigh heavily. “If they would have just downloaded my app…”
“It’ll be okay,” he assures me as his fingers pat my back. It’s…comforting.
I’m about to say something, but I get this weird feeling. Like someone wants to cause me some serious damage. When I scan the area, I notice Vanessa standing with a guy near the entrance of the cafeteria. The guy stops talking and stares at us as Vanessa shoots daggers at me. No, they’re not daggers. They’re fire bolts.
“Um, don’t look now, but your advantage from this whole shebang is working.”
“What?” he asks, looking perplexed.
“Your ex wants to send the grim reaper after me.”
His eyes flit around the area.
I hit his shoulder. “I told you not to look!”
“Right.” He pulls his eyes away and looks at me. “So she looks jealous?”
“Yep.”
I feel his body sag with relief and his eyes glaze over like he just got transported into Love Land. Population: two.
“Hey,” I joke. “You’re supposed to be obsessed with me, remember?”
“I am,” he quickly says. “I’m totally and completely obsessed with you.”
“Oh my gosh, dude. Get in line,” I joke again.
He chuckles. I do, too. We smile at each other. This is kind of fun.
“I’m starving,” Colt says as we enter the cafeteria. “Didn’t have a chance to eat anything—” The bell rings, signaling the end of lunch. “Darn it.”
“Sorry about that.”
He shakes his head. “Not your fault. So, can I walk you to class?”
I wave my hand. “I think we need to give the student body a break or they’ll have a heart attack. Besides, time apart is supposed to be good for a healthy relationship.”
