“I will.”

“Get in the house and lock the door.”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, Sir.”

“You’ll pay for that, little squirrel.”

She smiled and waved.

He pulled out of her driveway, and it felt like he was leaving the best part of himself back at the house. Hopefully, this would be the last time he had to drive away.

Chapter Fourteen

Janessa closed and locked the door and knelt to pet Luna when she rubbed against her leg. “I know you want him to stay here, and I do, too. Now we have to convince those boys of mine.”

She sat at the kitchen table and called Shane.

“Hey, Mom.”

“Hi, sweetheart. I need to talk to you and your brother.”

“Is something wrong?”

“No. Absolutely nothing wrong. I just need your blessing.”

“If this has anything to do with Nick, I say yes.” Shane chuckled.

She smiled. “Let’s get Chad on the line. Hold on.”

Her other son answered after a few rings.

“Hi, Baby. I’m with Shane. I wanted to talk to you both together.”

“Is everything okay?” Chad asked.

Shane laughed. “I said the same thing.”

“It’s like I told Shane. I just need your blessing.”

“On what?” Chad exclaimed. “This sounds serious.”

Janessa heard them both start to joke and finally cleared her throat. “Chad, you don’t know yet, but I met a man…”

“Nick?” Chad said.

She paused. “How did you know?”

“Me, Mom,” Shane said.

“Okay, well, this will hopefully make it easier. I’ve asked him to move in with me. You see, he bought the Jenkins place that butts up to us. He’s going to be working on it because it’s not livable. But he won’t move in until he gets your blessing.”

“That’s cool,” Chad said. “Okay.”

“If it doesn’t work out, he’ll move to his ranch when it’s done. He’s a really great guy.”

“Okay,” Chad said again, and Shane laughed.

“I think if you met him, you’d really like him. I think Shane does, and he’s been so helpful.”
