“Is your meeting with Trevor?” Shane asked.
Her gaze flew to Nick, who stood watching with keen interest, not even trying to act like he wasn’t hearing everything as he ate his sandwich. She glanced at her son. “Yes. He said there were things we needed to go over.”
“Like what?” Shane asked.
“He won’t tell me. It’s in his office, so I’m safe.”
“This is the third guy that’s bothering you?” Nick asked her.
She sighed and nodded. “I wouldn’t say the sheriff is bothering me. He just checks on me a lot, which is sweet, but I can tell he’d like to ask me out.”
“And this banker wants a meeting with you for what reason?” Nick asked.
Janessa frowned at her son.
“Janessa?” Nick asked firmly.
She sighed. “He says there’s a problem with one of my accounts.”
“How long has he been harassing you?”
“Right after Kevin died, he started coming over, wanting to help me with things.”
“Does he still do this?” Nick asked.
“Sometimes. I keep telling him to stop.”
“But he doesn’t?” Nick said.
She shook her head.
“Can he get to all of your accounts and money?”
She shook her head. “No. I have the farm account with him now. Everything else I have at one of the other banks in town. I moved it after Kevin died.”
“Good. Can you make another appointment so I can go with you?” Nick looked at her. “I’m sweaty and dirty. Not the impression I want to make.”
She shook her head. “No. I’ve put him off three times already.”
“Then I want you to have your phone on ‘record’,” Nick said.
“That’s a great idea,” Shane said.
She nodded. “I can do that.”
“Good. Can I stop by later? I want to listen to it.”
She nodded. “Sure.”
“Okay. Be careful.”
“I will.”
She returned to the Ranger, whistled for Luna, and drove back to her farm.

An hour later, she walked out of the bank shaking and nauseous. Trevor was the bank’s president now that Kevin had died, so he had an awful lot of power. He hadn’t come right out and said it, but he hinted that her account, which held a lot of money, could disappear. She didn’t know how he would do it, but she believed him.
