He smirked. “Oh, I guarantee you’ll love it. I have a question.”

“What?”

“Is there a chance you can get pregnant?”

Her heart sank. “Oh, God, I hadn’t even thought about you wanting children…”

His head shook. “Hold it. I don’t want kids. I’m asking because I didn’t want to get you pregnant. If you’re good, how do you feel about me not using a condom? I haven’t been with a woman in a few years, and I got checked out when I returned to the States.”

“I’m fine, too. I’ve only been with Kevin, so I think that would be all right.”

He pressed a hard kiss to her lips. “I wanted to check.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to have kids? You’re only forty-nine,” she said.

“I’m positive. Call me selfish, but I want you all to myself and be able to fuck you anywhere at home and not have to worry about them interrupting us.”

She pressed his face between her hands. “They do interrupt a lot.”

He grinned. “Let’s get the rest of the things.”

It only took them four more trips before everything was in the house. The last box was another one of books.

“You haven’t seen the den/office yet. If you want your books in here, set the box down. We’ll both have to share the desk if that’s okay, but there’s plenty of room on the shelves for all your things.”

He set the box on top of the desk. “This is great.”

She tried to look at the room through his eyes. She’d kept the dark wood bookshelves because they were beautiful and very old. The wood floor had seen better days but was still in good shape. She thought about refinishing it eventually.

The walls she’d painted the same gray she used in the bathroom and bedroom upstairs. She’d put a huge colorful rug on the floor to add life to the room. Besides the desk, large brown leather sofa, a few tables, and office chair, she’d put everything else in one of the sheds. The fabric had started to rot on some of the pieces.

She bought a few new comfortable recliners for each side of the sofa, took the old painting down that she always hated, and put up a flat-screen TV. There was very little wall space for pictures because of the fireplace and bookshelves, and she hadn’t found anything she really liked to put there.

She glanced at his face and saw him smile. “This is one of my favorite rooms. I might like it more because I wasn’t supposed to come in here unless I was cleaning.”

He looked surprised. “Seriously?”

Janessa smiled. “Yes. This was his castle. The boys and I could have the rest of the farm, just not this room.”

Nick grunted. “Let’s put these away later. I’m hungry.”

“I might still have some sandwich meat and chips. I haven’t had a chance to go to the store.”

“I’ll go with you. Let’s head in now, and we’ll grab something before we stop at the store.”

“There’s a really great deli down the road from the store I go to.”

“Perfect.”

The next few hours, she learned a lot about Nick. He didn’t like pickles and loved roast beef. He would eat lettuce salad, but it wasn’t his favorite. He’d beg her for brownies, her cheesecake, and chocolate chip cookies because he rarely got homemade desserts.

As she guessed, it took them twice as long to go through the store. He kept putting things in the cart. She tried to go to the vegetable section and point out the fresh-looking fruits, and he pulled her back to the junk food.

They were stopped by people she knew that wanted to meet him. She had to admit she’d never had so much fun going to the store before.

They got home and put away the food. They planned on grilling steaks for dinner later that day. In the meantime, they started to put his things away. There was plenty of room in both the bedroom closet and the den.

When they finished in the closet, she sighed and smiled. She gasped when he came up behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed and nipped her neck and shoulder. Her strength fled so quickly that it made her dizzy. He chuckled when she hummed and tipped her head to the side so he could get to more skin.
