Before Shane could answer, the woman brought the horse to a sudden stop several feet away, and a German shepherd came up behind.
Shane walked out of the shadows toward her with his hands on his hips. “What have I told you.”
The woman snorted. “When did you become the parent?” she said.
“When I can’t get you to settle down…”
She grinned. “When you push a baby out of your vagina, then you can tell me what to do.”
“Oh, for God’s sake, Mom.”
Nick had been in the shadows and stepped forward, getting her attention. His first instinct was to get her off the horse before she hurt herself, but she looked like she could control the animal, and he might get yelled at.
“Oh, yeah, Mom, this is Nick…”
“I … I know, honey. We’ve met,” Janessa said.
“When?” Shane raised a brow.
“At Nixon’s barn party a few days ago.”
Nick couldn’t take his eyes off of her. She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. He caught the curiosity on Shane’s face.
“It’s nice to see you again,” Janessa said. “Thanks again for the help that night.”
“You, too.” He turned to Shane when he looked curious. “I helped her out with a man that seemed to be stalking her.”
“Oh, which one?” Shane said.
Nick scowled. “How many does she have?”
“Three,” Shane said.
He turned his attention back to her. “What have you done about it? Have you talked to the cops?”
Shane snorted. “She can’t go to the sheriff because he’s one of them.”
“Shane, stop. You’re making it sound worse than it is.”
“Really. When’s the last time Henry stopped by your house?”
She sighed. “Yesterday, but Luna won’t let him out of his car.”
“What about Daniel?” Shane asked.
She frowned at him. “How about we talk about this later, honey?”
Nick loved the way she tried to get her son to shut up. She was so frustrated but tried to keep from yelling at the guy.
“Oh, I don’t know. Getting others involved who might help is a good idea,” Shane said. “You won’t listen to me.”
“If you keep it up, you know what will happen,” Janessa said in a grave tone.
“Oh, what?” Nick asked when the two frowned at each other.
“She follows me around and talks about gardening and shit I hate. When she’s really pissed, she sings to me. It’s traumatic.”
Nick smiled. The guy made it sound like torture. “It can’t be that bad?”
