“If I fully shifted.”
“Pro tip. A hot guy with a wolf’s head is much more fucking scary than a guy who shifts into a full wolf.” My inappropriate sense of humor always resurfaces when I need it less. Like, the fuck, what else could I have said. He was so scary.
“Noted.”
“I assumed you weren’t human. No one heals like that.”
“Yes. But it’s the mate thing I need to explain to you. You, Yana, are my Fated Mate.”
“I’m sure you tell that to all the girls.”
His human hands pressed into my soft thighs and his eyes looked into mine. I could taste his breath. He was so close to me. Was he aware that he aroused the hell out of me right now, being so bossy?
“There are no other girls.”
“Guys?”
Soren lifted an eyebrow in my direction.
“I’m too naked for a serious conversation.” I hoped to win time, enough for my addled brain to make sense. There is a sinfully sexy man here with me and, not only that, he wants me. He said I’m his Fated Mate.
He picked his jacket up and put it on my shoulders. The warmth of his presence and his scent engulfed me in seconds.
“Yana, if we mate, you will feel what I feel. You will be connected with me. My life thread will be yours.”
I shrugged in his jacket and threw him a look. “I don’t understand.”
“Didn’t you always feel as if something was missing?”
How could he know that?
I looked down and bit my lower lip. Nick accused me of having a low sex drive and not wanting him, not making him feel like a man. I never liked sex that much. It was never good for me. So often, I zoned out and allowed him to enjoy himself. It was as if something was missing. I even suspected I could be gay, but I wasn’t interested in women, so I concluded that I just wasn’t a sexual person. Yet how could Soren know? He just met me. With him, I was on fire.
“I… I had my problems. I don’t understand how you being some creature, some wolf that can’t exist, is connected to my sex life.”
Soren’s lips touched mine. He was better than any sleeping pill I tried. My entire body calmed instantly under his touch.
“When you’re with me, when you are near me, when I can feel your heart beating, the world is on fire, the night is brighter, and everything is different. Don’t you feel that?”
The words would have sounded pompous coming from anyone else, but his voice, the pure passion and sincerity in his eyes, made me believe them.
I nodded. It was impossible to lie.
“When we mate, when we are one as the gods intended, not only will you feel like that every day, you’ll live as long as I live. You’ll be immortal.”
“Wait, what? Are you some religious freak?”
As I said freak, I felt bad. As a nurse, I learned to be nonjudgmental with people’s beliefs. But the last thing I wanted was to land on some pyre and become a sacrifice to some god.
“Maybe you could call me that. It’s hard not to be when you’re like me. I am immortal. Like your grandfather and your father.”
I sat there, using his jacket as a shield, incapable of saying much.
“This is how I knew Ruby, your grandfather, Tristan was my best friend.”
“Yuck, you were friends with my grandparents? And his name was not Tristan. It was George.”
“Tristan changed his name to sound more American.”
