The other Demons scattered. Whatever the source of power was for them, it was now turned off. We ripped into them the way a starving pack rips into lamb chops. My fur was covered in blood when we cleaned our yard of enemies. It was a carnage, but my wolf rejoiced.
Will and Gunnar were both hurt. The Demons had used silver knives and swords, sticking them deep into their enemy’s flesh.
“Alpha,” said Torin. “Will is worse. Let’s take him to Yana.”
I looked at Will. He was still in wolf form and in shock. As I shifted into my human shape, I touched his head.
“You’re burning up.”
The pup shifted, his eyes glassy and tired. His breath was coming out in shaky, hard exhales. His body was hot like the sun.
“Alpha, I’m sorry.”
“No need to be. You’re going to be fine. We’ll fix you up.”
I inhaled the scent that wafted from Will’s open wounds. Something was off.
“Torin,” I called to my beta.
He came close and sniffed. No one had a better sense of smell than Torin.
“Poison,” he whispered through our telepathic connection.
“What type? We should be immune to those.”
“Yana, maybe she can help.” Torin sent the message through our link.
“Let’s get dressed. Gunnar, Gunter. Help with Will.”
Shortly after, we were driving to Yana’s. My stomach churned. I feared for the life of my pack brother. My fight with Yana felt small and lacking importance in the face of final death. Even us immortals are faced with the darkness of the end.

YANA
A knock on the front door made me lift my head from the pillow. Spike cuddled next to my chest and purred. My fingers slipped through his soft fur.
“Soren?”
My mind was blank. I was half asleep. I ran toward the door without checking my phone.
“Soren?”
I pulled the front door open . The tall man who stood before me wore only a pair of jeans.
“No. Can I still come in?”
The memory flashed in my head. My tired, addled mind worked hard to make the connection.
“Alistair?”
“Yes.”
“What do you want?”
“I would prefer to have this conversation inside.”
My eyes moved up and down the wolf who acted like a nut job this afternoon.
