“Hot cop,” I tell her but I don’t take my eyes off the scene playing out in front of me.
“This is the guy you’ve been…seeing?”
“What?” She finally has my whole attention. “Why would you think…I’m ‘seeing’ someone?”
“Because before you were all over the idea of asking Aaron Addison out and the other day you told him to get lost, you finally understood what a real man looked like and didn’t want anything to do with him anymore. Don’t you remember?”
I try to contain my frown, not wanting Milly to think I’m upset at her. I did tell Aaron that. Mainly because he was annoying the fuck out of me and all I could think about was a certain cop who only tends to show up during at night. It annoyed me that he was there, and Charlie wasn’t. I guess I wasn’t very kind about telling him to get lost.
Eyes land on me. Even in the dark, I can tell he is looking at me. Taking in every detail about me and what I am wearing. I fight the urge to pull at the skirt hem that barely covers the middle of my thighs.
“Looking for something?” I try to act nonchalant and cool, but it’s hard to do that with Milly hanging off my arm.
“Yeah, I sure am.” Damn, his voice is nice.
“What’s that?”
“You.” He says it so bluntly that I lose the battle with myself and shiver under his intense stare.
“Really? You’re looking for me? That’s hard to believe since you just come and go when you want. What do you want now? To tell me I have to be home by a certain time or else you’ll spank me?”
He looks around me, “Milly,” How the hell does he know Milly’s name? “My car is right down there; will you please go ahead and get in while I talk to Rani for a minute? Then I’ll drive you guys home.”
I narrow my eyes and step in front of Milly. She doesn’t have to do anything he says. He’s not her boss and he certainly isn’t mine. And even though I might be grateful that he stepped in when he did with that douchebag. I refuse to let him take me home one more time and just dump me off like some kind of garbage he doesn’t want to look at. It would seem that I’m about to tell the second male of the night to fuck off.
Chapter Six
____________
Charlie
I wait for Milly to run the distance between us and the car and get in before I take Rani by the arm and lead her halfway there. I stop short of the car not wanting our conversation to be overheard.
“You think I’m not watching you? Did you think I wouldn’t make sure I knew everything about you?” I wait but she just raises her chin at me in defiance. “You wore a blue shirt to school today with a plaid skirt and adorable black shoes with straps across the tops of them.”
Her mouth falls open in surprise.
“Monday you carried an armload of books out of the library with your best friend - Milly, who lives with her mom but spends the night over at your house quite a bit. Including last weekend.”
I see her deflate and start trying to make sense of what all of this could mean.
“Don’t doubt I am always watching.”
“Why are you watching? What do you want with me if you don’t want to…”
I put my fingers over her mouth to keep her from saying the words. “Be patient.”
She narrows her eyes but lets me help her into the car and even allows me to fasten her seatbelt for her. I start up a conversation with both girls and keep it going until I pull into Rani’s home.
“Can you give me a second, Milly? Go on inside and I’ll meet you in my room.”
Milly nods and takes off for the house. She’s a good friend for Rani. They complement each other well. She turns to me and I brace myself for whatever she is going to say.
For long seconds she looks like she might be gathering her thoughts, “What is this? You and me?”
I think about what to tell her. How much do I want her to know? “You’re young. You deserve to take this time slow and be allowed to be free.”
“So what? You don’t want me? If you don’t want me, why? Why show up and keep this…babysitting crap up? Why not just leave me alone and let me…”
