“I’ll take you.”
Wow! That’s the opposite of what I was wanting. He apparently can’t wait to get rid of me. I try to let it not hurt my feelings as I crawl around his floor looking for clothes. My shorts might work for work casual but my top isn’t going to cut it. There is no way I am wearing something so…feminine in front of Jeff. The asshole already hits on me all the time.
I sit back and look around for something to put on and finally break down and go to where Colm tells me Cade’s room is. I try to knock as softly as I can hoping against hope it’s my sister who answers and not a big angry Cade.
“Harper.”
“Coming.” I hear it even if it is softly whispered on the other side of the door. When it’s opened for me, my sister is standing in the doorway looking well loved. A flare of jealousy lights in my chest, and I try to push it down. I’m happy for my sister. I…just wish I had what she has. No one ever tells you that jealousy feels a lot like heartburn.
“I have to go into the office for an hour today.”
“What? It’s Sunday.”
“I know. Can I borrow your shirt from last night?” Harper stands there looking at me for long seconds before she tells me I’m fucked.
“I can’t find it right now." She looks back into the dim room. I can understand why she doesn't want to turn the light on. "Plus it’s been on the floor all night.” A blush hits her cheeks. Great! My sister got lucky, and I gave a blow job and got woke up early because reality just won’t leave me alone for one goddamned day.
I spot movement out of the corner of my eye but when I turn Colm is standing there silently looking like he can’t wait to leave. Like he can’t wait to get rid of me. Whatever. Jeff gets what he gets.
To make things worse, Harper gives me a big hug and tells me not to let Jeff be a dick to me. And now, I feel bad about ever being jealous of anything this precious woman has when she so clearly deserves all of it. Now I feel doubly bad. And the heartburn is back with a vengeance.
I settle on one of Colm’s shirts. Fuck it. Jeff doesn’t have to know I spent the night with a man who can’t wait to get rid of me. If he wanted office chic he should have waited until Monday. Colm stays just as quiet as I am all the way there. He parks even though I tell him he can just drop me off in front of the building and go back home.
Halfway through the lobby, Jeff is already in my face.
“What are you wearing?”
“I didn’t have time to change.” I start to tell him but then shut my mouth when I see his eyes grow big at the implication that I spent the night with someone. “Can we just get done with this? My sister is waiting on me.”
I try to give him a smile to ease the demand but he’s not even looking at me anymore. He’s staring at Colm, who I didn’t realize followed me into the building.
“Colm, you don’t have to wait for me. You can..,”
“Nonsense. It would be kind of stupid to drop you off just to pick you up again so we can both go home. Together.”
He throws his arm over me and pulls me closer to him.
“I’m sorry, family is heavily discouraged from coming to work with my employees.”
“Well, it’s a good thing I’m her boyfriend and not her brother, huh.”
Oh my God! I look and see a mean-spirited mask fall over Jeff’s face. Oh god damn it. I’m getting fired today.
“I wasn’t aware Harley had a boyfriend.”
“I wasn’t aware it was company policy for you to be all up in an employee’s personal life. I hope you’re paying Harley double-time for this little…stunt.”
“Oh my God!”
Jeff’s mouth is hanging open but Colm isn’t done. “Don’t think everybody here can tell what you are trying to do - and failing horribly at. You should be lucky my girl doesn’t sue your ass for sexual harassment what with you mouth breathing all up in her shit while trying to pretend you’re the one in control of anything.”
“I want you to leave. Immediately.”
“Yeah, well I want a decent Philly Cheese outside of Pennsylvania and people in Hell want ice water. I guess we all want something we can’t have.”
I should say something but I’m just too stunned.
“Let me just tell you, if I leave, she’s going with me.”
