I’m ready to argue with him, but at that moment Terry announces a text from Jeanette.

“She says she’s on an Uber and will be here shortly, but they got caught in traffic,” Terry says. “So there’s that. You notice she’s a lot more confident now than she used to be, or is that just me?”

“She definitely is,” I agree. “She was such a wallflower in high school, and it was up to us to break her out of that. Now she’s flipped to being probably our number one hater, so I’d say we’re going to have to break her out of that too, but I’m not sure we can with her attitude.”

“I think her attitude is hot,” Caleb says. “Makes me want to break her to us in a different way all over again, if you know what I mean.”

“I think we should try to break her to us again,” I announce. “We all know her better than anyone. At least, we used to. I bet you anything we could seduce her again.”

“Jesus you two,” Terry says with a small laugh. “Why don’t you give her a few days to get used to being a nanny before you jump her like that?”

“Don’t act like you don’t remember how good it felt to be balls deep in her pussy,” I say. “What wouldn’t you give to be able to have that at least one more time?”

“I’m not debating that,” Terry quickly replies. “I’m just saying I don’t know if she’s going to stick around if she gets wind of us trying to seduce her. We’re going to have to be smart about it—if we do it at all.”

“Either way, we’ve got to at least get her used to the idea of what she’s doing, and that has to start tonight,” Caleb says. “Right now, in fact.”

At that moment, a car drives up and Jeanette hops out. She’s got a duffel bag and a backpack, but it’s the diaper bag that catches our attention.

“You know he’s got all he can possibly need, right?” Caleb asks as Jeanette walks up to the bus.

“You realize I’m his nanny now, right? I know what I’m doing,” she snaps back.

Her attitude is clear, and I’m surprised my brother doesn’t snap back at her. There’s no denying it, Jeanette clearly hates our guts. I feel challenged by it, and that excites me. It makes me want to seduce her all over again even more than before.

And with the way Caleb and Terry exchange a look, I figure they’re thinking the same thing.

But, now’s not the time for that.

The driver’s ready to go, and so is the second bus. We were all waiting for Jeanette to arrive before we started, and now that she’s here, duty calls.

It’s time for us to hit the road.

EIGHT

TERRY

Isit on the long couch across from where Jeanette sits in the middle, with Hendrix strapped into his baby seat on one side of her and Caleb sitting on the other.

Hendrix is the only one who’s actually in a restraint in the bus, but we know that for his age and his size it’s by far the safest way we could travel with him. The rest of us primarily sit on the couches when we’re on the road, but the bus is secure enough that it isn’t entirely necessary.

But even with that being the case, we don’t usually move from one place to another while in motion, which means now is a good time for us to try to get to know Jeanette a little better. We were so close for that year in high school, but that was ten years ago now, and we’re sure she’s changed in that amount of time.

We all have.

Julian is the one who makes the first move. I can’t say I’m surprised by this. He’s our front man and lead guitar, and coincidentally the most outgoing of the three of us. Still, I’m admiring his courage for being the first to attempt conversation with Jeanette. She’s been staring at Hendrix or looking at anything but us since she got on the bus.

It's clear she’s not wanting to talk.

“So,” Julian says. “How have you been? It’s been years! You still in the same place you were working when we left?”

Caleb lets out a small scoff, and I have to keep myself from smiling at Julian’s pointed statement. Of course she’s not working for the same company. She came to us because she’s in need of a job. Not to mention she’s now in Detroit, not in Philadelphia where we grew up.

“You’d know if you hadn’t tortured me our last year of high school and made me want to make sure you never saw a thing I did ever again,” she snaps. “Maybe if you were nicer to me, I would have wanted to keep in touch.”

“Don’t know when we would have had the time for that,” Julian says. “We’ve been pretty much go go go for the past decade, isn’t that right, boys?”

“Not sure that’s something to be proud of,” she says.
