Hugging him back, my heart aches, consumed with both happiness and sorrow, “It’s good to be back home.”
“I’m going to spend some time with my little girl,” he addresses Dante, “but I want to speak with you later and thank you properly for taking care of her.”
“My things,” I sputter as I’m led into the house.
“Dante will bring your things up to your room.”
DANTE
As Sal leads her inside, I am suddenly thrust back into the role of the hired help. Doing as Sal wanted, I unload our things from the car and carry them inside, stopping at the door to ask the guards if they could get someone to dispose of the rusted Chevy.
Dropping some of the bags in the foyer, I carry our things upstairs and place them in our respective rooms. Quickly heading back downstairs, I grab the remaining duffle bags and carry them back to the armory. Taking my time, I unpack them, unload, and meticulously clean the guns as I put everything back in its place.
As I am putting the last Glock away, Sal enters the room and approaches me with his hand reached out towards me. Extending mine in return, he shakes it while thanking me for taking care of his little girl.
I just want to tell him that I would do anything for her, including give my life to keep her safe.
Instead, I take his gratitude while acknowledging it is the job that he hired me for.
“It’s late,” Sal retreats towards the door, “We can talk tomorrow about what you would like to do next.”
“Next,” the question blurts out of my mouth probably a little faster than it should.
“You have obviously proven your worth to this family. We need to discuss how to utilize you going forward,” his hand taps the doorframe as he leaves the room.
Fuck.I hadn’t thought of the possibility of being removed as her security.
Heading upstairs to get some sleep, my brain is reeling with ways to convince Sal to keep me where I am. My heart on the other hand is terrified that I will no longer have a reason to be around her.
Reaching my room, Venecia’s door is closed. I hesitate for just a second to knock on it, before making the smart decision and heading into my own. After kicking off my shoes and stripping out of my clothes, I climb into the bed.
It feels massive and empty without her tiny body being pressed up against mine.
Most of the night is spent thinking about how either of us will survive if I am removed from her security. The rest is spent missing the feel of her naked body nuzzled tightly against mine. It isn’t until the early hours of the morning that I manage to fall asleep.
Waking a few hours later, I am showered and dressed by seven, and heading down to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee. While I am a little surprised to see her, her schedule has changed dramatically in the past few days. Venecia is standing at the coffee pot, with her back to me, waiting for it to finish brewing. Walking towards the coffee pot, my eyes are completely fixated on the tiny bit of ass peaking from the bottom of her shorts.
“Good morning, cuore mio,” I whisper as I approach behind her, prompting her to spin around. When she turns, I am met with a blushing smile.
“Morning, Dante,” she glances over my shoulder and smiles, “Morning, Papa.”
“Since when do you get up this early in the morning,” he calls across the kitchen.
“Dante wasn’t big on letting me sleep in,” the corner of her mouth ticks as she tries to hide her smile, the two of us secretly aware that most mornings I would wake her with my face buried between her thighs.
Chapter Twenty-Four
DANTE
“I was going to wait until a little later in the day,” Sal looks to me, “but since you’re up and we’re both free, why don’t we take our coffee to my office and finish our conversation from last night.”
“Of course, sir.”
Following him down the hall to his office, I push the door shut behind us and take a seat opposite him at the desk.
“Did you give any thought to what I said last night,” he takes a sip of his coffee, “and what it is that you would like to do with the family going forward? If not, I have some ideas as to where your skills would be a good fit.”
“Actually, sir,” I try to ensure my voice sounds pragmatic, “I think it would be best if I stayed on with Venecia for a little while longer.”
